Following-on from a couple of recent comments in a previous post, we were wondering which two (only) apps someone might download to MuditaOS if it were indeed possible to do so? My choice would be Signal, it’s my main form of communication and I don’t see it as a distraction at all.
I would download Signal. It enables sharing of pictures etc.
I don’t think I would actually download anything else as it would move away from what the phone is (e.g. YouTube, BBC News etc. would just make me look at my phone more than I would want to using a phone like this).
I do hope they enable sync with google calendar like Lightphone do so improvement on the calendar app would be my biggest ask!
DUB Music player or similar
VIVALDI as Browser (mix of Opera and Chrome)
Instant messaging is over rated (I do use Signal and Telegram). Good web browser enables more.
Off course all e-ink K-OS optimized and supported.
If browser cant be done I opt for Telegram - better file transfer, more users then Signal and better forums.
Signal is good, but young.
My local public transportation app. You can buy monthly tram/bus tickets without it, but it’s more expensive. It’s also harder moving around in the city when you don’t know when the buses/trams are supposed to come.
I definitely would not download anything else initially.
I have a good combination today of a Sunbeam Wireless F1 Orchid + a SIM-less, de-Googled Google Pixel 6, the latter of which is where I run a podcast player, Audible, Session, etc.
The Kompakt will replace the Orchid, and I plan today to keep the aforementioned AOSP-compatible apps on the Pixel.
Very similar, I have a de-Googled Pixel too, using it for podcasts/radio/email/Garmin. I plan to keep this at home and use the Kompakt as my main device.
For me, the two apps would be Signal (But I’m seriously considering BEEPER) and Audible.
Although, I do listen to podcasts- it’s just specific episodes, here & there. I’m not into any specific podcast, where I wait for each episode to drop. And I can always download the audio of those episodes & listen to them when I want to.
Beeper is just well integrated center, but please check do you have to have installed Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp etc. If you do, its no no.
Audible needs Amazon account (which I do have) but is wicked requirement, plus tries to charge monthly after trial by giving card data, which is big no no for me.
I’ve been an Audible user for over 20years- I think even before they were taken over by Amazon. Back in the day (early 2000s) Amazon only had like a 5% stake in the company & the main investor was Microsoft. Amazon completely take over Audible until 2008, by that time, I had amassed so many books in the service- I stayed, even though I’m not a fan of that platform.
I was a You tube user when it was fast, with less restricting algo, no commercials.
Then Google became monster and control freak.
Can you recommend good free or newer replacement?
Also check Animals in harmony thread and personal msg.
The only app I would sideload is mapy.cz ; ) they offer downloading of the maps for offline use and also for offline navigation and their usability is stunning around the world. But I really hope there will be possibility to sideload at least any app that is available on android on google play, because I am not naive that all the people are loving this or that for navigation or this or that for communication, or anything in particular question.
I’m still all for Signal only although I am going to miss a radio player. I use RadioDroid usually. Wherever possible I am using desktop apps/web versions. I am happy to see even Garmin have acknowledged that not everyone has a smartphone, you don’t need one in order to use their wearables, you can set them up and maintain them via the Garmin Explore app on Windows/Mac.
Beeper/Signal - Beeper is great by itself. However, to get voice calls you need to Signal app too installed on the phone. If I couldn’t do both, I would probably just do Signal. I gotta have encrypted voice calls.
Music app - My preference is Tidal (pays artists more). But there has to be a music streaming app of some sort. (Spotify would probably be more popular).
Ultimately, I would love the ability in the Mudita desktop app to select an apk and immediately sideload it. By having to go to another app and enable developer settings, I think that would still respect the default minimalism for the Mudita Kompakt; but some users just need that really obscure app that will never be supported anyway.
The Rivian app to continue having the extra features my smartphone gives me with my new truck.
And Youtube Music because that is what I currently use for streaming music.
Qobuz. French music streaming. I have a feeling that your thinking is inline. A marriage between you could be a happy one. For me Qobuz is the natural choice.
