As you may know, use of WiFi is a way that Apple and Google make GPS work indoors. (Apple and Google have massive databases that correlate GPS data with WiFi MAC addresses, which enables them to know where every WiFi access point is.) Someone from Mudita pointed out on the Kickstarter campaign pages that the Kompakt does NOT use WiFi as a secondary way – what is called a Network Location Provider (NLP) – to identify where the Kompakt is. This is intentional and for our privacy, and this means that your Kompakt must have a view of the sky in order to see GPS satellites.
As you can see from this Kickstarter screenshot, Kompakt also will NOT support a Secure User-Plane Location (SUPL) provider, such as Google. This also is intentional and for our privacy.
oh, so indoors gps doesnt work? is that correct?
Indoors GPS generally will not work, by privacy design by Mudita.
However, you may be able to get GPS to work indoors near a window or other opening to the sky.
By the way, I get similar behavior with my Garmin navigation device, which does not use NLP or SUPL. I must take my Garmin device outdoors or at least put it inside near a window or an opening to the outdoors so that it can lock onto GPS signals.
I got my phone yesterday. I still don’t get how the navigation works though. When I get a GPS signal outside and search for a location to navigate to, the map automatically goes there - but it doesn’t show me how to actually get there. Am I missing something? Thanks.
I have the same experience. However, I believe that Mudita is planning to add navigate-to support to the Map app.
Meanwhile, I have sideloaded the HERE WeGo app and the RHVoice app.
HERE WeGo supports voice-assisted navigation, but it is NOT optimized for E Ink. I would prefer to use the built-in Map app, as its map are crisper. Still, if one needs navigational support, then the Map app is NOT the way to go – at least not today.
More benefits of HERE WeGo: The points-of-interest (POI) database includes, beyond the full address of a POI:
Thanks for the quick response. I have watched a video about sideloading apps, but to be honest, I don’t find it straightforward, so haven’t been able to do it. I was under the impression that the maps app included navigation. I didn’t realise it was a future intention.
@nba Navigation is going to be added in an update. Our team is already working on it.
Hopefully this rolls out by the time the NA phone drops!
I understand that GPS may take time to lock on to satellites but the current message says: “make sure that GPS is switched on”. Doesn’t this suggest that there’s a setting to switch on? And where do I find that?
Jonke9
Hi @jonke9,
To find GPS switch, you have to click bottom right button (with two vertical lines), then click settings icon in the bottom left, then scroll down and you will have “Location Sharing” listed. There will be a toggle to switch GPS on.
However, my GPS is not working even if it’s switched on…
Make sure you enable it as well as allow for the app.
Mine works like a charm while I’m sitting in my house, western part of Poland.
It was turned on and enabled.
Today I tried again in my garden (I live near Warsaw) and it worked. I don’t know why it wasn’t working earlier. But it’s not working inside the house.
@sinnari I am having the same issue as you
It is not meant to work inside because there is no A-GPS or any other assisted GPS, only the pure satellite connection, so only works outdoors
To make sure the GPS works- make sure it’s turned on and enabled.
Make sure, you allow LOCATION access in the app.
Additionally, please remember, that it works best outside, with a clear view of the sky.
Im having the same issue with GPS. Everything on as should be and outside, tested on multiple days. Also doesnt work for the weather app or a sideloaded maps app that i tried.
For me it just took close to two days. I had everything turned on, and got the same thing from the phone, “make sure gps is turned on”. It was. No contact. I thought I had a faulty unit and had decided to contact Mudita. Then suddenly it just started working. I have no explanation for why. Since then it has been working flawlessly. I sideloaded the Here Wego maps, which are great. Sideloading is a bit complicated to start doing, but once you get it done it’s easy.
@urszula these were all on and not working. Having said that, today I turned off developer options and its now working flawlessly. If anyone else has issues with GPS its worth trying to see it that’s the cause
