How to download a text-to-speech engine for Here WeGo maps

I am trying to use text-to-speech in Here WeGo maps for directions, but it says that “A text-to-speech engine isn’t found on your phone. To use voice guidance, enable text-to-speech in your phone settings or install one from the Google Play Store.”

Whenever I press “Open phone settings,” none of the options are interactible.

Has anyone figured out how to get text-to-speech working in Here WeGo maps, if it’s possible? Thanks!

I saw in a different thread that someone is using RHVoice to do this.

I just tried using RHVoice but it crashes my settings app when I try to set it as default text to speech engine… I’ve tried restarting the phone but still crashes

Are you trying to set it within Here WeGo? It crashes after I set it as default, but then it’s fine after that and remembers moving forward with no issues.

Yes, from within Herewego… It brings open the voice options dialog box with an option to “open phone settings”… then for a split second I can see where to select a text to speech engine but then it gives me an error message “Settings App stopped working”… so it’s just stuck on the “No voice” option

Have you set up within RHVoice already?

Yes, I have at least tried to setup rh voice… I installed a voice and in the settings, I clicked on "Set as your prefered text to speech engine. Actually when I click on that option in RH voice, it also crashes the settings app

I’m sorry, I can’t imagine what it would be. Perhaps try removing the apps then reinstalling? Definitely annoying!

Ok, thanks for your help! It’s usable even without voice, so I’m not too concerned about it - though it would be nice.

Agreed, definitely an awesome maps app. It shaved significant time off of my work commute, which is insane considering I’ve been using Google Maps for the past month. I’m considering removing RHVoice since the voices kinda suck anyways lol. Good luck to you!

I relied on HereWeGo directions to navigate me home the last week on a few car trips and I must say, I found it rather relaxing. There’s a dinky little sound if you happen to veer over the speed limit and, more importantly, a sound given when you approach a turning. I found the whole thing relaxing. More pleasant than some systems that either overwhelm you with turn directions too early or stack too many turns on top of one another. I find those not just annoying but disorienting. This was a much more pleasant experience. I recommend people try it as-is.

Agreed! Although I had to turn off the speeding sounds. Everyone drives fast in my city and the chime was going off almost non-stop during my commute.

I had the same problem and used SherpaTTS from F-Droid. Seems to be working very well, but I have only tested it in the settings and not done real navigation so far. I also tried eSpeak, but the voices are horrible and give you nightmares.
