Fix for Mudita SMS App Crashes

Hi everyone,

Heads up! In regards to reports from some of you experiencing issues with the Mudita SMS app (including crashes) after setting a sideloaded, third-party SMS app as the default.

First off, we think it’s great that you’re exploring the full capabilities of your device. While sideloading is done at one’s own risk, we absolutely want to help you get things working smoothly.

The good news is we’re already working on a permanent solution. The upcoming releases will include a new option in the settings to let you easily choose and change your default application.

In the meantime, for anyone who has run into this issue and wants to restore the original SMS app, we’ve prepared a temporary fix. You can use the adb command below to reset the Mudita SMS app as the default and get it working again:

adb shell cmd role add-role-holder android.app.role.SMS com.mudita.messages

I haven’t sideloaded any apps, but the SMS app keeps crashing anyways. Do you think this fix would still help?

@clark I would give it a try in the meantime. The update should fix this issue, but you can try this command in the meantime & see how it works for you.

huh it seems after an update the Mudita SMS app that I on purpose disabled and replaced with a more feature-full open-source alternative was re-enabled, and that’s why it’s crashing now. So I would say the correct “fix” for me is to disable the Mudita SMS app again

edit: adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.mudita.messages
