Light phone 3…After a lot of thought I am going to stick with the light phone 3 which I pre-ordered day one, ultimately I just like the look of it vs the Kompakt, the fact that it does not look like a smartphone is huge for me that and I just have gotten so use to the light phone operating system. I am excited for the amoled screen and I won’t miss e-ink. That plus when I thought about it I don’t trust the device will work flawless in North America, just too many bad memories from the about of time and money I wasted trying to get the pure to work in Canada. Light phone I have never had any issues.
Will continue to use my Mudita Harmony because I love it but won’t be supporting the Kompakt project, Hope the phone works out for everyone else and I wish Mudita a successful launch!
I totally get where you’re coming from @anon52747040 , and it’s great to see your support for Mudita Harmony! I also have the first version and it has come a long way!!
Anyway, I have to admit, I’ve decided to go with Kompakt. I trust Mudita and believe they’ve learned a lot since the Pure.
What’s the sense supporting a company if we don’t put trust in them fixing their mistakes?
As for design, I guess it’s a matter of taste—I personally like the minimalist look of Kompakt, and the E Ink display is a big plus for me. LP3 literally went away from it. Plus, I’ve been impressed by Mudita’s approach to digital wellbeing on a holistic level, so I’m willing to bet on Kompakt doing things right.
Good luck with your Light Phone 3, though!
Let’s see where things go, and who knows, you might yet change your mind…again
To me, the light phone company seems to do better in the software of their phones. Maybe it’s just a matter of experience at this point though.
I do love eink though, it makes a device so much calmer. I notice it whenever I use my eink reader.
For example, there is no need to worry about turning off the screen or being annoyed with a screen timeout like on smartphones (I turned off the screen timeout completely on my smartphone to mimic this , but now I have to worry about screen burn-in instead when the brightness is too high).
So eink really makes the Kompakt more interesting to me, also the price.
There is Light Phone 2 , but ironically it has unsupported connectivity in my country so I don’t have it.
So after all, Mudita would be my preference if they really make the software good. I dislike the feeling when software development stops on a product that I purchased. I run a damn iPhone because of that, and I pre-ordered a LP3 because of that.
I will get the Mudita too though, just because the eink is also a big deal for me. The calamity of eink feels so good.
I understand where you’re coming from, but I don’t understand why you made up your mind a few days from when the Kompakt kickstarter will go live. I mean, truthfully, anyone who has preo-ordered the Light Phone 3 has until the end of the year to cancel it. Considering that the Kompakt Kickstarter is coming at the end of the month, that leaves two whole months to think about it, without having to cancel your pre-order or promise to back up the Kompakt.
Anyway, at the end of your day, it’s your decision and I hear ya, I just think it’s an unneeded premature decision. At least, even if you’re 99% sure with which way you’re going, you’re still going to have the allotted time to think things through. If I were you, I’d at least explore the Kickstarter once it becomes live…doesn’t seem like it will hurt. Like I said, right now, we’re in a limbo state and making a solid decision now doesn’t really hurt or help you. It just exists. I hope that made sense.
I’m pretty sure which phone I’m going with, but I’m going to remain open-minded until I learn more about the Kompakt, then I can make a well-informed and sound decision for myself.
I ve checked LP3 just for wisdom and form factor is nice, looks less stylish then Kompakt but then again, feature list is clear and good. Its both modern in some aspects, and retro in aspects of privacy and offline.
My decision, as not being so rich, is to refund Pure (allowed by Mudita) and simply wait and use my modded Nothing Phone 2a Plus meanwhile. NothingOS 3.0 is coming soon then these two and I like both look and options, and coupled with quite clean Android I have added just exactly apps I believe don`t violate my privacy and are absolutely necessary.
Result is similar: Not deGoogled, but less Googled/Social Smartphone that is quite nice and needs no import mambo jumbo.
From Kompakts POV it will cost me more if buy one later, but software might get more mature and product clearer / more informative buy then price rush '/ support.
My biggest issue is a day before launch still we don’t have all the info about the phone. I don’t understand the logic behind this. I need to know FULLY what this phone can and cannot do , what apps are available, has a big impact on my decision. I am just frustrated by their marketing strategy. LP3 day 1 they announced the phone we knew EVERYTHING about it
Possible lol, but they would have to BLOW my mind with some new information before this thing launches tomorrow, and even then my fear is the phone will have similar issues to the Pure when trying to use it in North America
In my experience, Kickstarters serve to fully detail the product. Leading up to this point, they have released enough basic information about the phone prior to launching their Kickstarter. In fact, most companies are encouraged to wait a few months (or time it so that whatever their launch date is, start advertising and getting the word of their product out there at least a few months prior) so that they can get enough momentum to get people excited and therefore have a higher chance of more backers, so that they’re able to reach their goal and make the product.
Currently, Mudita has talked a lot about this coming phone and they’ve worked hard to bring more details, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing that they haven’t released every detail beforehand. The point of a Kickstarter is to go over everything you’re supposed to be backing it up for, so not too long, you’ll have that information,
I understand your impatience as a lot of us are both excited and also really wanting to know certain details, but like I said previously, the launch of their Kickstarter is not officially putting the phone up to purchase immediately. In fact, their kickstarter is aimed to get enough funds to make these phones, it isn’t even a pre-order stock. This means that until they fulfill their goal (and hopefully with the amount of people who have been notified, their advertising and word of mouth, it won’t take too long), then it will be up for the entire duration, with probably early bird specials and such. They’ve already announced what their price will be prior. I wouldn’t expect them to release all the information before the Kickstarter goes live.
The good news is, just like you, there’s an entire community who is excited for launch. We are just going to have to wait. You will get all the details soon enough and have time to think on it.
LP3 is a different situation. I mean, unless I’ve missed something because I admit, there was a few months I wasn’t actively waiting for LP3, I only learned about it a month after their earliest sale ended. Anyway, Light Phone set out their model to pre-order, meaning, they already have enough money to make the phones for people. That is why they had to detail everything because once you set your pre-order, you’re essentially saying, yes I want to purchase the phone, please send it to me.
With the Kompakt, it looks like they don’t have enough funds currently to even make the quantity of phones for a bigger population, so backing it is saying, yes I see your vision and I want to give you money so that you can make it happen, hopefully so that I can one day hold this product in my hands. And because Mudita has had success previously, then we can trust that they will deliver on their product. Kickstarter is simply a way for companies to make enough money to support their vision, it doesn’t mean they have ready-made products available.
Even though Light doesn’t have phones made yet, I’ve been following the progress and Joe said they are on track. They’ve finished with getting a lot of licensing done and they clearly have enough money to actually make those phones.
The business model is different due to how much funding each company has. It isn’t so much that Mudita chose to do it like this, it’s because they don’t have enough money to make it pre-orders.
At the end of the day, I understand your frustration, but it it’s important to understand why Mudita chose to do this instead and understanding the difference between why Light didn’t need to do a whole kickstarter for their new phone and why Mudita feels like they do. Because of these differences, that is why Light had to write every last detail out for the phone, whereas Mudita will have to do so when the Kickstarter is live. Their advertising did not have to have all the details, and it’s a good thing they don’t because it leaves some information to look forward to and helped increase momentum for their backers.
No problem I’m glad it made sense and was clear. Again, once it launches tomorrow, you’ll have all the details and then you will literally have days to decide…even months. It is not all down to the wire, just yet. Early bird discounts may go quick, but, in terms of regular backing by putting money where your mouth is, that will go at least a few days or weeks I bet. Then yes, you can make a completely informed decision for yourself!
Very true, at the end of the day, I could put the money down for the pre-order I can still keep my LP3 pre-order and cancel it anytime before its launches in January, and even just keep it get the phone and if for any reason I don’t like it I can easily resell it on reddit
The other I thing I thought yesterday the phone has a really good battery and with the e-reader it would replace my kobo reader and that is one less thing to carry around. Ultimately I think it will still will be a hard decision which one I will choose LP3 or Mudita Kompakt but it makes more sense to pre-order both and then make a more informed decision. I think for me I just hate not deciding on things lol, but in this case I think patience is the best route to go, thanks again for your posts!
Not sure you can tell us this, but is there a feature where I can turn off notifications from appearing on the home screen, for example with the light phone 2 my home screen does not show me text notifications so if I am listening to a podcast and I need to turn on my screen to forward the podcast I don’t see a text notification that will distract me.
