Excited to continue to see the improvements for both phones
Not having CalDav is a serious drawback to the Kompakt which I think a lot of users won’t realize until they get their devices. A completely offline Calendar that can’t sync with anything??
I believe Mudita is going to eventually have the tech behind the scenes to sync. It is possible via software update
Great review. I agree, It definitely does come down to preference because they both bring something unique to the table.
Personally, battery life is one of the most important things to me and E-ink is easier on my eyes. A cell phone that can last 7+ days is uheard of these days and feels like it should be illegal. Privacy wise, Mudita takes the win there too because I much prefer a less polished open source GPS than being forced to use Google services.
I think if the Kompakt had a removable battery and physical buttons it would be the perfect phone.
Just a clarifying point. No Google services on either phone. Light uses the Google API for the directory tool, but there is no data being shared. It only pulls the information from Google.
Interesting! Thanks for clarifying.
I don’t think that is the end of the world, It certainly would not make me not choose the kompakt, to me the Kompakt is the best choice when you look at giving options to your customers, Light says this is what we believe , take it or leave it, Mudita says this is our philosophy, but if you want to add things to the phone and customize it to what YOU need than we will allow you to do that.
If I’m not wrong, @urszula mentioned somewhere on this forum that battery is going to be purchasable for some number of years (4? 5?) which would allow to purchase one or two before end of sale to extend phone longevity.
Or maybe it was the Q&A…? I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure something like that appeared.
You could just sideload davx5 which is a foss CalDAV/CardDAV synchronization app and some calendar app like Etar (also foss). Should work nicely.
@buiosu It’s a bit more complicated than just buying it & swapping it out. I believe we would have to do it in-house because lithium batteries are classed as dangerous goods, and their transportation needs to be well monitored to ensure safety and minimize potential risks during transportation. We talked about it extensively in another post on this forum:
Thanks! Well, what can I say… What a time to be alive. XD
I understand it’s not easy, but for example, there are iFixit kits for many lithium battery phones with like 30 steps- including prying the screen open with a suction cup. I was hoping that for those of us willing to void our own warranties, that we could potentially do it ourselves. Could I also maybe suggest Mudita looking into teaming up with iFixit?
@The It’s not about taking the phone apart. There are restrictions in place that don’t allow the shipment of certain lithium batteries WITHOUT the device.
I’m puzzled as to why the price isn’t addressed in this comparison.
Because once you get past the $250+ mark, it’s about value to the person.
I agree. People can make the Mudita Kompakt as feature rich/distracting as they’d like. Calendar, Maps, etc.
I would not say ‘distracting’, lets say for example you do CHOOSE to make this a smartphone, putting instagram , facebook etc, you tube, with the e-ink screen it will be slow and sluggish, our brains want FAST and EASY, so frustration sets in, and frustration is a great deterrent
From a marketing stand point as I mentioned before Mudita made the right call giving the consumer the option to do what they want with the phone they buy, rather than having a philosophy thrust on them
@Jose_Briones Thanks for the video, I appreciated the side by side comparison
@Jose_Briones thanks for this, I had been looking forward to this comparison video
One thing I dislike about LightPhone3 is that it supports 5G which to me (and many others!) is like a phone that has a direct connection to hell on Earth. I love that Kompakt does NOT support 5G.
And I love that Kompakt is so customisable!
Also is great to see the sizes of the handsets side by side.
5G = Hell on Earth? How so? All this EMF talk is so unscientific that it wants to make me leave the community!
5G allows the LP3 to be much more future proof, since 4G or some bands could be turned off in the future and replaced with 5G bands.
Plus you could always turn it off in the settings to 4G only.
