@davidray in this iteration I don’t seem to be able to ad podcasts to my following list. I proceeded as with other versions.
It will even say I followed a podcast but it won’t show up on the ‘following’ screen.
I was able to manually download an episode.
This was Beta V3.1, I never got to adding podcasts on V3.0 before there was a new iteration.
Sorry for the trouble @jawn! When you move from v2 to v3 did you start with a fresh install? Because of some database changes I made, migration from v2 to v3 was nasty so you have to manually uninstall the app before moving forward. On the Kompakt you have to install an “Uninstaller” app from a third party store or sideload one.
@davidray resetting the phone seems to have resolved the issue!
Sorry you had to reset but glad it resolved the issue!
- Thank you. Page scrolling works fine now.
- About 45 minutes. I always download on Wifi. (For comparison, downloading the same podcast episodes on Pocket Casts is very fast.)
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
- A queue or playlist are the same thing in my mind. Either will do. It translates to a playing order. This relates to point 9 – changing the order that downloaded episodes will play.
- To clarify, I would like to determine the order that episodes will play (in the queue/playlist). See attached image. Three episodes have been downloaded as follows: Episode 50, 309 then 308. Imagine I’d like to re-order the episodes so they playback as follows: Episode 50, 308 then 309. Central to any queue/playlist is that episodes in the queue/playlit automatically play one after another i.e. ‘autoplay next episode’.
- Thank you.
Thanks!
Currently, it will save on device storage. I’ll look into a setting that allows you to choose where you want your storage.
Resuming episodes should be fixed in the latest 3.1 update. If coming from v2 (or didn’t fresh install for v3) make sure you delete the app before moving to any of the v3’s. Let me know if this remains an issue.
Gotcha, those all make sense. I’ll let you know when queue/playlist support is added. I’ll circle around after the holidays and try to start work on them. Thanks again for the detailed feedback.
I installed 0.3.1 this morning. I listened to podcasts for about two hours throughout the day (on my way to work and home). There were no problems. In the evening, I was able to continue listening where I had left off in the morning.
If you can fix the memory selection issue, I can delete AntennaPod. Your app is so beautifully minimalistic and everything fits perfectly with the Mudita Kompakt! Is there any way I can send you a small donation for your work?
Have been enjoying the app now for the last few days! Hope everything works well after I download v3.1. Would a feed of newest episodes be possible or is it maybe intentional that you haven’t included one? I just find it a very convenient way to keep up with new episodes and see which I might want to download.
I ended up with some free time and started the external downloads option. Testing it on my phone now but I don’t have an sd card. If standard downloads still work, I’ll create a release and let you test it.
Also, totally do not need any donations but if you feel so inclined, I added a “buy me a coffee” link to the Github page.
Glad you’re enjoying it! My plan potentially was to add “badges” to the podcast on the following screen for how many new episodes it has since you last viewed. My goal is to not drive bad habits of wanting to check the app. It should be intentional that you open the app. That’s a hard balance to find, it has turned out, for something like a podcast app.
This app is great. Thanks for all your hard work @davidray!
Podcast apps are notoriously difficult to develop. Everyone has a different opinion about listening workflows and what features should be included. I’m pleased you seem to have a clear vision of how to keep the app simple and intentional. I’ve seen so many podcast apps start off simple and gradually get ruined over time by the addition of complicated playlist/queue features, overwhelming settings, etc.
If you’re looking for any inspiration, the Queue app for iOS is one of the most interesting I’ve used in recent years. The constraint of having just one queue (which a few basic features like allowing episodes to be re-ordered and some simple settings) seems similar to what you’re aiming for. CalmCast is pretty much doing this, and ‘Downloads’ could probably just be tweaked to operate more like a queue.
I have a couple of suggestions based on my initial testing:
- The ability to add custom RSS feeds will be quite important for a lot of users. As an example, I subscribe to a few Patreon creators, and they provide custom RSS feeds as part of the membership. I can’t currently subscribe to those podcasts in CalmCast.
- The ‘Following’ list doesn’t seem to be sorted currently (it’s just in order of recently subscribed). I’d suggest just sorting by name, I don’t think it needs to be customisable.
- I enabled auto-downloads, and I got a weird issue yesterday when refreshing the feeds where it started downloading a huge number of seemingly random old episodes. I had to uninstall to stop it. I’ll reinstall today and see if it happens again. But I assume auto downloads is supposed to work how I think it should, i.e. just download the most recent new episode of each podcast, not any old episodes?
Edit: I see from the code that the Following list is actually sorted by latest episode date. That seems fine, but it could benefit from including ‘Latest episode: <date>’, or ‘Today’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘Last week’, etc. on the podcast row to indicate their order, and it would also help indicate when new episodes are available.
That could be an idea. I totally understand the thought behind using the app, and apps in general more intentionally. I guess everyone has different addiction patterns and constantly listening to podcast as background noise could definitely be one.
This is awesome! Thanks for making it.
One suggestion - could there be a toggle in settings to ensure that mobile data is never used to stream or download, for those of us with limited data plans?
Here is my one hold up from downloading this as my podcast app… I need to be able to adjust the audio speed from 1-4x speed in .5 increments. Could this be added?
@solv yes! I am one of those limited data plans people as well.
@htoke Absolutely, this is on my current shortlist.
I’m finishing up a few things on the Directory app and then I’ll be back on this. I’ll update here when I have a new release.
Great feedback @snptrs! I’ll take a look at some of this and see how it fits into my near future plans for the app.
- The ability to add custom feeds is currently second on my to-do list.
- I like your suggestion for maybe just going alphabetical on the following list for consistency.
- I plan on adding badges for new episodes on the each podcast you follow.
- I recently ran into the downloads issue so I will see if I can figure out what’s going on there (I think I have some rogue code that is re-ordering the episodes list making the auto-downloads think it’s the most recent one so it downloads it, then it changes the order and starts the process over). It’s supposed to only download the latest episode if you haven’t already (so if you delete it, it shouldn’t redownload it.)
Thanks again!
Thank you! What does the directory app do differently than if I just looked up a location on Waze or Maps?
Primarily, it’s just meant to be a simpler, cleaner, E ink friendly way to find what you’re looking for. Using Waze or Maps can be cumbersome and not ideal for finding details like hours.
Love the look of the podcast app nicely done, I do notice that is takes a long time to download a podcast, unless this is an issue from my end, also for the directory app do you have step by step directions on how to make it work, I am not very tech saavy
