Many people see social media AS essential apps.

A television advertisement yesterday for the YouTube TV streaming-TV service showed an actor enjoying watching four different TV channels in four quadrants of his TV screen. YouTube TV promoted that as active engagement. I saw it as chaos and DECREASED enjoyment.

You must have been watching the SUPER BOWL  I can’t imagine watching 4 TV shows at once, because I know our attention is NOT flexible like that.

Scenario #1

As posted earlier, imagine friends or relatives sitting together in a restaurant but with an open, running laptop in front of each person. That is not dining together, where “dining together” means enjoying one another’s company while eating. Instead, that is the equivalent of a conference-room meeting – but without even a hint that everyone in the room is focused on the meeting.

Scenario #2

Somehow we rationalize that the same friends or relatives sitting together in a restaurant with unlocked smartphones delivering different passive content to each person is the equivalent of dining together, but it IS NOT.

Scenario #3

Now imagine the same friends or relatives sitting together in a restaurant to watch a sporting event on a TV set in the restaurant. That IS dining together, with the addition of an outside source of conversation – the sporting event.

The Distinction

The distinction to me between scenario #3 and scenarios #1 and #2 is whether the scenario creates a shared experience. Staring at individual smartphones or laptops does not create a shared experience. In contrast, watching a single TV program together can create a shared experience – as can attending a play or concert together (two non-technology-requiring activities), and as can listening to a radio program or cooking together (two technology-requiring activities).

A Way to Identify Mindful Tech Use

So, perhaps the following question provides a way to determine whether the use of a technology around others is an example of mindful tech use:

  • Does the use of the technology around others lead to a SHARED experience?

Great post, I can honestly say 5 years ago I was addicted to tech and missed all sort of moments of being present, but not anymore, this weekend I spend a total of MAYBE 20 mins online, the rest of the time I was taking my kids to ballet, soccer, basketball and I was present the entire time while literally everyone around me was lost in their smartphones missing their children grow and learn right in front of their eyes. Every day my Harmony wakes me up and the first thing I do is get to the gym, I have my light phone with me (soon to be Kompakt  ) and I am not checking email etc, I am always present wherever I am now and it is so refreshing to live your life outside of the matrix of tech. Although I do agree that tech is not 100 percent to blame BUT I believe they have to do a much better job not intentionally creating apps meant to hack our brains and get us addicted, especially kids, tech needs to show a lot more ethics than they currently do. Thank god there are companies like Mudita that are literally changing peoples lives, and I hope every employee at Mudita is proud of the work they get to do every day to change the tech landscape for the better

“We Speak 3,000 Fewer Words Daily Since 2005”

The author of the following article wrote “verbal communication” when she should have written “oral communication” (given that verbal communication includes oral communication AND written communication), but this article is still quite fascinating and made me think about this blog topic:

@minimalist4life Well done! What a great shift you’ve been making and that you’re enjoying it and aware of enjoying it is so heartening to read. Thankyou for sharing!

@urszula I find that when I engage with my laptop or phone I am (usually) very focussed, I download longer articles and turn off internet connection before I read them on my laptop.
I have lists of what to focus upon because I’m aware of the mindless scroll factor and my love of ‘window shopping’ on certain websites.
My cat is great at letting me know when it’s time to switch off so I make sure I do all the important things online first.

I have been avoiding making phone calls because that would mean using a temporary smart phone which is NOT good. It has a physical electrical buzz and interferes with other electronics, not to mention me and my whole environment! Anyhoo, looking forward to receiving the Kompakt and making a few calls without the phone vibrating my environment to bits…

@kirkmahoneyphd you have a different way of looking at things… I second Urszula’s idea of you writing that blog :grinning:

Thinking about the shared experience of two+ people on one end of a telephone call using a cellphone in speakerphone mode, I have a question:

  • Will the Mudita Kompakt have a speakerphone mode?

I did not find any mention of a speakerphone mode in the Indiegogo and Kickstarter campaigns, although I found this, and I do not know what an “ACC Speaker” is:

How have you found your day to day use of the Kompakt vs the pure?
Are you still focused and present ? Also have you sideloaded any apps?

Thanks! Plus, it is nice to see the Kompakt making a Wi-Fi call!

@minimalist4life I really LOVE using Mudita Kompak. The eInk is so smooth & crisp. I sideloaded WhatsApp & it works fine. I’m gonna try audible and see how that works.

@kirkmahoneyphd The reception is great! I think people are going to be super happy.

Was it hard to sideload? I mean from a beginner perspective, I have zero experience , how long would it take for me to learn how to sideload? The only apps I would consider sideloading are spotify and the a minimal launcher because I like the interface on the Light phone 2 where the are no apps but replaced with text instead

@minimalist4life It’s not really hard. I’ll be honest, there is a bit of mucking around, but the steps are easy & straightforward. You can get tutorials on ADB installation on YT & if someone like me could do it, you could do it.
