Android 16 on the Kompakt

So thanks to @jayloofah, they figured out that MuditaOS 1.1.1 is the only version that will boot a GSI. Unsure what mudita did on the newer versions but they should fix it… lucky I had an old dump of that version.

nice. honestly adding group messaging fixed my issues anyway though. What are the advantages of this?

For me native notification bar/popups, the 3rd bottom button functions with androids native recent app switcher screen. Those are my main things I wanted and sideloading the mudita optimized apps seem to run on this fine at least the few I tried/use.

Other things would be to not have broken android settings, prevent random errors, and to have 2025 security updates.

Hello I’m interested for the img if you have it

Wow, this is impressive work! Can you explain to other user who are potentially interested in this upgrade (me!) how you were able to do so?

is this standard android 16 with the tacking and telemetry that is usually included, or a de-googled version?

@gezimos this may make your work easier?

@ryanness It’s awesome to see the progress on GSI & LineageOS, hopefully we can get a dedicated build for this device. But this doesn’t affect inkOS, I try to support all android devices from Android 8+.

Once there is some clarity around the process, I’ll provide a basic tutorial to flash a GSI (generic system image) for Lineage (which optionally has no Google services).

It does mean a full wipe of the phone and we’re not completely sure about all of the compatibility issues there are.

We have to downgrade to 1.1.1 to make it “work” ?

Thank you! Are you able to share how things are going so far (for the deeply curious lol)?

Hey guys just wanted to say that me and another person when in halves to fund a kompakt for a dev who plans to make a custom gsi for it. Those who want to flash a gsi, I would probably wait until whenever they get the phone and get the custom gsi created. Me and several others are using random gsi’s from online which do have some bugs which one of them being the phone restarting when receiving an incoming call with the display locked. There is a workaround that seems to fix it by enabling a list of settings in the treble settings that comes with the GSI. I am not sure what other issues there are yet but I think having one custom, bug fixed and with eink controls like the dev plans on doing will be much better of course. Currently to make this work you do have to downgrade your phone to MuditaOS 1.1.1 which obviously Mudita does not support so you have to use a system dump for that and then you can flash the GSI. I have not created any instructions on how to do this yet because I am letting Jay have first dibs with that since they were the one who figured out the whole boot issue which was needing to downgrade.
My experience with the GSI is that LineageOS 23(android 16) does feel a bit more slower than LineageOS20(Android 13) so for that reason I have flashed android 13 back to my phone that ive been tinkering with. RCS messaging does work when you flash the GSI with gapps built in but google pay does not. Oddly the tmobile digits app would not work with the original gapps it comes with but after flashing the microg conversion magisk module the digits app finally worked which allows me to send/receive calls/sms through the digits app with my main number. This modded device I have a different sim in for data only. I did also notice that vanilla GSI without gapps feels the most snappy which makes sense since less system resources being used. The main thing I appreciate from the GSI is the native recent app switcher and native notification bar pull down/pop up notis,

The android 16 GSI can be found here: Releases · MisterZtr/LineageOS_gsi · GitHub
The android 13 GSI can be found here:

Its the lineageos 20 td arm64 BvN(vanilla) or arm64 BgN(gapps)

Hi @jordan,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to share all of these juicy details!

I am hoping to ask a couple of follow-up questions:

• It looks like Google is still publishing security updates for Android 13. Does that mean the custom Android 13 build you’re working on would also continue to receive those security patches (for example via updated monthly security levels)?

• When you mention “Google Apps,” which ones are you specifically referring to (e.g. Play Services, Play Store, Google Messages, etc.)?

• Lastly, would Find My Device functionality be expected to work on this Android 13 GSI (assuming Google Play Services is included), or are there limitations with GSIs that would prevent device locating / remote locking?

Just to follow up I’ve made a guide for anyone looking to try these early experiments themselves!

No problem! I am not the one who is working on it but if andy continues maintaining the GSi then I would imagine so, same with charlie if they create the custom gsi for the kompakt I would assume it would have the newer security updates but not 100% sure.

I just mean gapps as in the google play services stuff that adds playstore and all.

I am not sure on the find my device feature. I did install microg now so I assume that would be stripped

Yes Find My Phone feature works. I installed the GAPPS version of Lineage 20 GSI See below.

Thank you for letting me/us know! Personally, I’m unable to consider the Mudita Kompakt as my primary device (and candidly not even as a secondary) device until it offers current/ongoing Android security updates and stronger resilience in the event of a lost or stolen device. It would also be great to have reliable push notifications and the ability to download apps directly from the Google Play Store for security reasons. I’m not knowledgeable enough to be an early experimenter, but I truly appreciate everyone sharing their experiences so far and look forward to more mature, out-of-the-box, and tested solution in the near future!

Regarding development costs, perhaps it might be worth considering a way for the community to contribute financially for those who want to support this effort (for example, a platform like Buy Me a Coffee).

How slow was LOS23? Was it unworkably slow or just a little more sluggish than LOS20? Was that with or without gapps?

I’d like to have something newer than 13 since IIRC it was 15+ that started including some increased security protections against stingrays, which is nice to have in the current climate in the US. But obviously the phone also has to be usable.
