3d printing phone case file for the kompakt

And that’s exactly the main issue with almost anything.
@urszula is trying her best, but the team… well nevermind.

@YYZ I’ve followed up again today.

I have to say holding the Kompakt feels a lot better without the case, it makes the phone slimmer too. Having a case would be nice, but the rubbery material is very unpleasant to hold in my hand. I have no experience with 3D-printing, so I wonder which materials could be used for such a case.

I used PLA. It’s probably not the best choice but it’s what was available, probably better than nothing, and it’s still much more pleasant to hold than the case I got from Mudita. If you have more options, though, I’d go with TPU since it’s more rubbery and probably provides better shock absorption.

Don’t mind the free gas station pop socket on the back, lol.

This was my third run. First was too small. Scaling it up by 1% worked pretty well but on this latest attempt I changed the scaling on the width to only +0.5% and it’s even better.

It is worth noting that the need for scaling might be the result of me using PLA. I might eventually try the original dimensions using TPU since that has some more flexibility to it.

I like the PLA one! But it looks a bit grainy. Would it be possible to have it more slick and even ? Kinda like the Kompakt without a case, but with a case ?
I think I’d like to have a case that protects back AND front at the same time. Some kind of transparent gorilla glass thing (some kind of graphene ?), but ultra-thin so it doesn’t add a lot of weight and thickness. I guess this would be possible, but probably not self-made with a 3D printer.

P.S.: Do you have a CAD file for this ?

The texture on the back is the texture of the print plate and the sides get some texture too just from the way the filament is deposited. I have smoothed out other models post-print just by spending a few minutes with some sandpaper. I don’t plan to do it for this because I like the texture and it makes it easier to hold but it’s totally doable if you wanted a smoother case.

This print was PLA but if you used an ABS filament you could also smooth it out post-printing by using an acetone bath. Here is a guide to that:

The stl file is just the one from @nipko that was shared earlier in this thread:

You could try thinning out the walls if you want a smaller case but at some point I think it stops being protective if you take too much material away. I’ve seen some people talk about using resin printers for phone cases. Resin might do better at creating an ultra-thin case and resin typically produces much smoother prints too but I’ve never actually seen or tried a resin case.

Thanks a lot. I’m a bit overwhelmed

I just printed this print using Matte white PLA on my Bambu Lab a1 and it turned out fantastic!

I am going to experiment with making a version that has MagSafe mounting point so you can easily line up a MagSafe ring for wireless charging and using MagSafe accessories like car mounts etc.

That’s so cool. Looks really good.
