I’m so excited to get my new Kompakt in coming weeks! I am an avid user of the app iNaturalist, which enabled you to photograph, identify, and catalogue organisms. I am hoping to side load it, but it also has a fully functional desktop site if not. However, one core component of iNaturalist is mapping out where the observations occur, and this relies on the location metadata automatically includes in smartphone photos. Since I know Mudita has a very privacy focused ethos, I’m expecting the location metadata to not be automatically included for photos. Will this be a toggleable setting feature, or will I have to use some other means to add location data to my photos? In general I’ve often found it helpful to have a clickable GPS coordinate tied to my photos so I can remember where it was taken, but of course this isn’t crucially important.
@calathea Welcome to the Mudita Forum. We’re glad you’re here.
Unfortunately, our team does not know the answer to your question.
At Mudita, we do not actively encourage the use of sideloaded apps, as we cannot guarantee their compatibility with our device, nor the overall performance and user experience of Mudita Kompakt when such apps are installed (e.g. speed, battery life, responsiveness).
That said, we understand and appreciate that sideloading is an important and useful option for many users. We’re glad to see that some third-party apps work well on Mudita Kompakt and that members of our community are generously sharing tips on how to sideload and which apps are functioning smoothly.
As a small team, we are unable to test or monitor the performance of sideloaded apps, nor can we offer individual guidance or technical support related to their installation or usage. However, we invite anyone looking for advice or support to visit the Mudita Forum, where our engaged and knowledgeable community may be able to help.
@urszula I think maybe I haven’t phrased things correctly - I’m not asking about the app functionality at all. Many people use iNaturalist from their computers and upload images taken on DSLR cameras have GPS capabilities. So the side loading of the app is not relevant here because I can still participate in iNaturalist without mobile app.
The only thing I want to know is when I take a photo on the Kompakt, will there be location GPS coordinates attached to the metadata, or will it be an option to include it?
@calathea Now I understand. I confused your app with the one I use, PlantSnap- where pictures are taken BY the app & then analyzed. I just checked one of my pictures & here’s the info that’s on a picture that I took earlier today:
Meta Data:
Thanks for sharing @urszula! Yes it’s similar to the app you use, where you can take pics in-app, but I didn’t want to rely on this working on the Kompakt. It looks like from your metadata there’s nothing indicating a location, so I suppose the answer is no.
A follow up question would then be - will there be any options for saving your current GPS location, or making it easily viewable, either through the navigation app or elsewhere? This could also come in handy as a safety feature, or as a way to share your location with friends who want to meet you somewhere.
@calathea I will check with the team.
