Yes, that’s the post: Security Updates - #4 by urszula
Long story short, AOSP 12 has the most recent security patch from early 2025 and as I understand Mudita will look themselves after any security threats that require addressing.
Your concern makes sense, and I think some are instinctively explaining or justifying their reasoning with their use cases in mind. I rarely use my phone’s hotspot - almost never - so for someone like me it’s not that big of a deal. But if you use it for work and want this to be your only phone, yeah it seems like you might need a workaround. There are USB sticks that can act as a receiver for your laptop, which may be worth looking into (smaller than most standalone hotspot devices).
I see Mudita’s approach to the hotspot like their approach to sideloading apps. It’s possible; it’s there, but it’s not something they designed the phone to excel at. So I understand why they went with 4G here. . . but yeah. Hope you find a workable solution.
Yeah at the end of the day it is very hard to make a phone that suits everyones individual use case, its damn near impossible
@anon7028788 Like I responded earlier:
@slowpaste
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, and for placing your trust in Mudita Kompakt — it means a lot, especially coming from someone who values open ecosystems and digital freedom.
Your point about the 5G omission is completely valid, and you’re definitely not alone in raising it. The decision not to include 5G was intentional, aligned with Mudita’s core philosophy: prioritizing battery life, simplicity, and mindful use over always chasing the latest spec. I actually posted about the hype of 5G in a separate thread:
That said, it’s great to hear that the openness of the device, the Linux support, and features like the headphone jack and NFC still made Kompakt the best fit for your needs despite this limitation. That kind of real-world, pragmatic minimalism is exactly what we’re hoping to support — not creating artificial scarcity, but offering just enough without turning the phone into another attention trap.
Also, your note on IEI-EMF is incredibly refreshing. We appreciate your clarity and nuance — it’s a conversation that’s too often dominated by extremes, and you articulated a middle ground with both skepticism and respect. We’re very conscious of how the Pure was perceived in that regard, and Kompakt reflects a clear shift in tone and direction.
Thanks again for being part of the community. The feedback you’ve shared here is helpful not just for us, but for others trying to weigh similar compromises in their digital lives.
Correct. 4G will be around a long time.
Decisions made on national and regional infrastructure are salient to this topic. In the UK, 5G coverage is still so patchy that coverage rollout is likely to take another 5 years. At that point I would expect comms companies to ditch 3G, but I don’t expect 4G to be retired until there is 6G. As others have pointed out, 4G is sufficiently performant for virtually every use case except streaming in ultra-HD, which is out of scope for this device.

“Yeah at the end of the day it is very hard to make a phone that suits everyones individual use case, its damn near impossible.”
Yep.
I’ve been on the lookout for a minimalist phone for a few years now and I long ago discovered the first rule of, hmm, niche phone club is that you must talk quite vociferously about what it does/doesn’t/should/shouldn’t do, haha!
My chief motivation is I want to emulate the era of my life which was post internet, pre smartphone ie late teens when I’d go out, go to college blah blah, come home, and maybe spend an hour in the evening on the computer checking out video games news and such. That’s it. Versus what I’ve come to consider the nonsense ideal of being always online and in the know. I came to this realisation in about 2018 and have been gradually eroding my online activites to barely 30 minutes screentime a day on my iPhone 13 Mini. Found I read a lot more books and truly started enjoying music again on a dedicated digital audio player.
I’ve bided my time waiting for the phone that seems to strike the right balance for me, long considering the Punkt phones and earlier Light Phones. I finally preordered a LP3 prior to being aware of the Kompakt, but since realised the Kompakt is more what I’m looking for. My 13 Mini will be going in a drawer when mine arrives (soon I hope!), strictly reserved for certain trips where I’m certain to have need to tether it to order an Uber, or scan QR codes or use maps a bit more intensively.
I haven’t cancelled the LP3 order yet since it’s July/August at the earliest which gives me ample time to formulate an opinion on the Kompakt.
I’m making the same journey: iPhone 13 Mini > Mudita Kompact.
Hurrah.
I actually ordered the kompakt instead of the LP3 because it’s 4g and lp3 is 5G, and because of the e-ink screen as well as the better price.
Say what you will about the “conspiracy theories” but I do not believe 5G is healthy for us and don’t want to support it. I actually pay more for a phone plan that doesn’t support 5G service, which is ridiculous.
As far as work goes, my husband has been working from home since 2020 on a 4g modem (we are rural, literally the only option) and it has not been a problem whatsoever.
@tkbunch Welcome to the Mudita Community! We are so happy you’re here & that you chose Mudita Kompakt. I think you’ll be very happy with it.
My main reason for ordering is that I want to be more mindful and present again. While I work in computer science and also enjoy the occasional World of Warcraft session, those are both things that I chose to do and that are located at specific places.
I don’t want to spend all the other time like on my commute to work or sitting on my parents’ balcony staring into a phone that demands my attention or tempts me to “google just one other thing” if I could observe my surroundings, read, knit or do something else instead.
Good for you I went on this same path in 2021, I just was tired of always staring at screens, constantly, what I found helped like you is leaving specific areas where I spend time online and that has worked wonders, besides work which I have to be online for, I spend less than an hour a day online for personal use. And on weekends I have went entire days not accessing the internet at all and I can 100 percent say it has made me a much happier person
I wish that I could also be down to one hour but I hope that I am slowly getting there. I still need to figure out a way not to feel like I’m missing important stuff when I don’t have constant access to my personal emails. Maybe, it’ll help that 95% of them are spam anyways and I usually know when important stuff like shipping confirmations or bills come in. So checking twice a day or when I know that something is coming up should be enough.
Yeah we honestly do not need to check our emails as much as we do, but our brains love that dopamine hit!
I’m trying to think that way now: if something is really urgent, I’ll receive traditional mail or a phone call. ![]()
Is that also valid for Mudita forum? ![]()
hahaha true
Making the same jump from iphone 13, refused to upgrade because there was no regular sim option in the us anymore and used it with an lp2. I ended up selling the lp2 because of issues with navigation and preordered the lp3 on june last year, after the tariff delays i decided to order the kompakt and keep my preorder for the lp3, I guess I’ll try both and see which one is the better fit and the otherone might go to my wife or one of my children as they are to start driving soon.
