Why don't any dumbphones offer rideshare apps?

I understand that Uber and Lyft both require Google Play Services, but does that make them completely mutually exclusive with a modified OS like the Mudita Kompact’s? This is less a question about whether or not support for Uber or Lyft is being considered, but if it’s even possible.

This has been the #1 thing preventing me from ditching my smartphone entirely. I live in a big city and don’t have a car, and Uber/Lyft have a duopoly on the (affordable) cab dispatch game at this point. Uber does do phone reservations, but only until 10 PM. :weary: So it’s a safety issue.

You can use Uber without Google Play if you use the web app. Most likely you’ll be able to figure a way with the Kompakt and Uber. But we have to wait and see how hard they customize the OS.

My understanding is that the makers of these Android apps like to use the Google services (e.g., for locating customers and drivers). If someone knows that my understanding is incorrect, then please post a correction. Thanks!

Rideshare apps have run out all the affordable competition in the cab dispatch space where I live, it’s only the black car services left now. Much more expensive and takes much longer.

Wait, did they confirm the Kompact will have a browser? I’d actually rather it didn’t, so that wouldn’t be worth it for me personally, but it would definitely be a viable workaround for others.

They haven’t confirmed it yet.
