What is Kompakt Community App Ranking and how to make the most of it?

The Kompakt Community App Ranking is a shared library of reviews, written by Kompakt owners, covering the apps they have tried on their phones. It aims to help answer a practical question of: which apps work well on Kompakt, and which ones do not.

Why it exists

Kompakt runs MuditaOS K, which is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project). Given that it is a de-googled system, not every third-party app behaves here the way it would on a standard Android phone. Some run cleanly, some run with quirks, some do not run at all. The App Ranking gathers what the community has learned so the next person does not have to start from scratch.

How to post a review

Find the thread for the app you want to review, or start a new one if nobody has yet. Describe how the app actually behaves on your Kompakt. Does the core feature work? Do notifications come through? Have you run into crashes? Include your MuditaOS K version and the app version you tested, and be specific. “Messaging works, sending attachments fails” is far more useful to the next reader than “mostly fine”.

How voting works

Each app can be voted up or down based on community experience. When enough owners report that an app runs well, it rises in the Ranking. When reports point the other way, it drops. The Ranking reflects real use from the community, not editorial judgement from Mudita.

Making the most of the Ranking

Before installing something new, check whether it has already been reviewed. If the app is ranked and working, you have a reasonable baseline to work from. If it has not been reviewed yet, and you do install it, feel free to share your experience with other users. That is the loop that helps keep the App Ranking system useful over time.

A note on security

Mudita does not host, verify, or recommend specific apps through the Ranking. It is a community resource, and it works because you bring your own judgement, particularly around permissions, version numbers, and where an APK came from. Anything sideloaded is installed at your own discretion.

Very good idea.

@shadock thanks :slight_smile:

@urszula I was going to add an Aurora store based app (Merlin Bird ID) but the review template requires an APK link and checksum. Neither of which are available for Aurora apps. Is the community app reviews just for open source apps?

@Minimus I will pass this on to the team. Thanks for the feedback

I also use aurora. I just put link to google play and try to manually figure out which app version is the one to use.

BTW: there’s something wrong with the post approval process: I submit a review and am notified it needs to wait for approval, but then it appears my browser still thinks the review post is being edited and whenever I try to navigate elsewhere I am warned the my draft post may be lost.

In the meantime, @Minimus : how well does Merlin work?

Merlin actually works pretty well! While it’s not optimized for e-ink, the default background color is light so everything shows up well. The only issue I’ve had is that the app crashes if you try to take a photo for photo ID within the app. If you select from the phone’s gallery it’s fine. The sound ID is what I use the most and it seems to pick up bird song pretty well. I haven’t noticed a huge difference between the Kompakt and my smartphone.
