This is from Mudita on you tube when someone asked about whatsapp, they mention sideloading apps
‘Please note that sideloading third-party apps may affect device performance and void the warranty. Additionally, some apps may require Google Services, which could limit their functionality on the device’
I do like the idea that some apps will have limited functionality because they require google playstore, I like some friction for people that don’t want distracting apps like instagram for example
@anon52747040 If people don’t know what they are doing & sideload some sketchy app which will brick their phone, then it is what it is.
To be honest, I sideload apks to my BBQ10 all the time, some of the work, some of them don’t because they are either not made to for that screen size (therefore look weird) or my BBQ10 doesn’t have the features the app requires. It’s a hit or miss.
Yeah but is that a good option to have access like this? What if someone innocently makes a mistake and downloads a bad app and it bricks the phone through no fault of their own, all of a sudden their phone is null and void with no refund not sure thats fair. This could be anyone not that tech saavy but because you guys have given this capability I don’t know if thats the best idea
@anon52747040 True, that’s why we don’t recommend it, unless you know what you’re doing. Many reputable apps let you get their apks from their website. But if you just download anything off the internet- without knowing what you’re doing- you must know you’re taking on a risk.
I get that but your advertising especially the video that launched the phone has all this messaging about being in the moment etc etc, yet you have created a device that gives people the option to make it distracting, I just don’t get that and it feels like false advertising in a way. You are advertising hey we are minimalist and are suggesting you read books etc, but hey if you want to make it a distracting a device and here is how you do it, oh by the way we don’t recommend it ? By giving people the option to do it you are endorsing it, but also saying if we download a bad app the warranty is void. Thats not cool to me.
@anon52747040 I get it. We understand that our messaging about embracing minimalism and being present might- to you- seem at odds with the option to install additional apps on Mudita Kompakt. Our primary goal is to promote a mindful and distraction-free lifestyle, encouraging users to be more in the moment.
However, we also recognize that everyone’s needs are different. While we advocate for minimalism, we want to offer flexibility for those who may require certain functionalities for essential communication or specific tasks. By providing the option, but not the obligation to install apps, we aim to accommodate varying user preferences without compromising the device’s core minimalist design.
I don’t plan on doing it for Kompakt, because, in reality, I’ve had that experience with BBQ10 & other messaging apps, I don’t have the need for anything else.
Ditto for me. I do not plan to install apps (such as APKPure, which lets me find and install other AOSP-compatible apps) on the Kompakt for the foreseeable future. I already have de-Googled a phone, and I have the apps on that (SIM-free) phone that I need beyond what I need today on my Sunbeam Wireless F1 Orchid and beyond what I will need when the Mudita Kompakt replaces my Orchid next May.
I use my de-Googled phone for Audible and a handful of other functionalities that I do not have on my Orchid. I plan at this point to use my de-Googled phone for those same functionalities when I replace my Orchid with the Kompakt!
