Ive been using the Mudita for about 3 weeks now and I did not expect to love it this much, I had even preordered the commodore callback months ago thinking this phone was a temporary detox until october. Now I can say that I am not going back, I refunded my pre-order and I am keeping this phone full time.
I love the sideloading features of this device, allowing me to have the essentials that I need ( a browser & Spotify ) and nothing that I dont. I started off with instagram and a few other apps sideloaded, but the e-ink display seriously helped with doomscrolling, i went down from hours on social media to a half hour maximum per day. I even stopped staying up and I am finally going to bed early and getting a full nights rest. A week ago I deleted instagram and all the other social apps and have not turned back. I like that when i use my phone, its because im TALKING to people, engaging in conversation and not just scrolling on a page and being influenced to buy something, or see something terrible everyday. I go outside alot more and pay attention to my surroundings. it feels like life before I got my first smart phone. before the age of 12 If i wanted to be on the internet, i would go on a computer, and then I wasnt always scrolling away, i would go outside, do creative things. my mother might of been onto something, it really is those dang phones lol. anyways, thank you, i just wanted to share what its been like, im glad i took the leap.
Do you ever call someone back when he or she text-messages you?
I ask because I sometimes fail to meet this goal that I set for myself several months ago:
IF I see a incoming text-message soon after arrival, THEN my goal is to CALL rather than to reply by text-message.
I set this goal because:
I know that the sender of that text-message is still near his/her cellphone;
Telephone conversations are much richer than back-&-forth text-messages;
I want to encourage friends and relatives to call me.
Unfortunately, it can be tempting to reply by text-message, which can require only seconds, instead of to have a telephone conversation with the sender, which can have a longer, unknown duration.
I love this and want to improve it. My default is to text because I don’t want to impose… yet I am old enough to remember times of long phone conversations before smart phones. Definitely a much richer connection. The Kompakt actually makes texting just a bit harder so this should be motivation to call instead.
@cyrodiil Thank you so much for sharing this. It genuinely made me smile.
What you described is REALLY very close to what we hoped Kompakt could help people achieve: not disconnecting from technology completely, but creating a little more space to decide what is actually useful and what is simply taking up your time and attention.
It’s especially wonderful to hear that this has gone beyond screen time and translated into better sleep, more time outside, more awareness of your surroundings, and more real conversations with people. That’s a pretty meaningful change in just three weeks.
And we have to admit, the part about your mother being onto something with “those dang phones” gave me a laugh.
Thank you for taking the leap, and thank you for coming back to tell us what the experience has been like. We really appreciate having you in the community.
This is really encouraging to read. I think the biggest benefit of a device like this is that it puts some friction between you and the endless scrolling without completely cutting you off from the things you actually need. Going from hours of social media to barely 30 minutes is a pretty significant change. It sounds like you’ve found a much healthier balance with your phone rather than simply giving up technology altogether.
