I too have been keeping an eye on this phone. If it could load GrapheneOS I think it would be perfect. I’m wondering with the apparent slab design of the Mudita Kompact how it will differ from the Light Phone II.
I had hopes for it since I do like combo of QWERTY and e-ink but in despite IndieGogo backers should have it by now, very little that proves its existance can be found. I ve been following company for some time, but also nothing other then promo materials could not be found. I believe full specs are also unknown so far (as they are still for Kompakt too, but Minimal claims to be in production and delivery stage while Kompakt is near to KS)
To me its a lie, its not a minimal phone, its a smartphone, very misleading phone there is nothing minimal about it
Yes, name is missleading - keyboard is expanded, e-ink might be minimal to modern smartphone size, but rest of marketing plays on Mudita-like scenery while likely to innovate very little, or do anything in that direction. I say that after following them for few months
I believe you have your own vision of what Minimal phone should be, and that real Minimal phone will be soo different from your vision, it will heavily disapoint you.
To me sell point could be QWERTY alone, but experience with e.g. Sagem Puma, Yota Phone 2 and several other experimental phones over time, is that software side is very important. On current smartphone market I hold Nothing company high for making simple, good and retro NothingOS, not just well designed phones and Glymph lights.
I have checked and I found dubious GrapheneOS is more secure Android for Google Pixels only - because that should be way of stock Android / AndroidGo and KaiOS not FLOSS solution for Googles phones alone.
I dont say its bad - its more likely to be good, I just find who is behind it a bit dubious.
I agree with what a lot of people have expressed in this thread so far. I want to also add that I remember when I got my first phone with a keyboard. It was a Verizon Motorola. It looked like this:
I know it isnt the BlackBerry, but I remember being so excited that I didn’t have to press the number twice or three times to write a letter. However, the keys were so tiny and now that I’m an adult, I can’t imagine having to type on that; my hands are bigger now.
There is definitely a different group of people who The Minimal Phone caters towards, but definitely not me. Just love how much bigger the buttons are on touchscreens. I also just don’t care for the design of the phone, either.
I’m still between the Kompakt and Light Phone III.
The project does look interesting, but I have concerns about it really becoming developed and getting off the ground into people hands. Like @anon11367638 said, there hasn’t been much info. They did post a video of an engineering prototype- but I’m not sure where they are at in actually getting that phone out to people.
Yeah the entire project has been very sketchy in my opinion right from the beginning
@anon52747040 Don’t get me wrong, I would love for it to succeed. Yes, on some level, it would be a competitor to Mudita Kompakt, but that said, I can’t deny that it’s a really neat idea. However, having been around during the development of Pure, and now Kompakt, developing a phone like that is SERIOUSLY HARD WORK. It’s really not for the faint of heart. It REALLY does take blood, sweat & tears to get a phone off the ground. And, to be perfectly honest, this doesn’t look like a big enough operation to pull it off.
I don’t think its legit competition. You guys have a solid philosophy. The minimal phone is a smart phone, there is nothing minimal about it. Full access to every app, for someone with an addiction the phone would just not work
