The AI thread (positive/negative)

This thread is for all things AI, positive or negative. AI haters welcome :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I think Sam Altman is quite terrible. If our devices are no longer ours, but used and owned by AI companies, I’ll go live offline in the forest.

Is it safe to say that memory sharing for AI is not an option, or possible, on a Kompakt phone?

He just makes it sound like he wants everyone’s memory, independent of the device. Just his greed and arrogance is appalling.

The people making these things are deranged lunatics. The Antrhopic people believe that their chatbot is alive and conscious.

The negative externalities of LLMs (stealing everything, destroying rare books, heavy scraping of every website, slop images and articles and software everywhere, massive energy usage, etc) are horrifying.

The social costs are pretty terrible too. People are being expected to “go faster” at their jobs with fewer resources and only these stupid chatbots to help them out. People are losing skills and offloading thinking to LLMs.

The companies are not profitable. At some point the token costs must go up, and then who will pay those costs? Will LLMs be subsidized?

At the same time it is really cool that they can help people make new software quickly. A truly skilled developer with an LLM can really work wonders. Even someone with low skill can build something they wouldn’t otherwise be able to build.

Although chatbots lie and make stuff up all the time, they can help people understand something like a legal contract or medical report they would not otherwise be able to understand without hiring a lawyer or doctor.

This is really cool technology, but I’m still struggling with “is it worth it” - for me personally, and for the world. (trying to be “mindful” )

I appreciate the two realities you’re holding here. The “middle way” for me is decentralization and public services: imagine in your neighborhood your local library (for example) ran your micro-data center and provided some of the wonderful tools that AI can offer people (to help write their resume, understand things better, make that perfect app for the Mudita Kompakt, etc etc), and we voted on it and paid for it with our taxes like a public utility, rather than a private source of wealth for a select few?
Just my 2 cents

This is a cool idea. Local citizens can pay for a tower of mac minis for the library and get a rate-limited api key in person that lasts for, say, a year. Or it can only be accessed on-premises.

“We investigated one of the world’s largest AI data centers, using thermal drone footage to reveal the hidden pollution powering the AI boom. As companies race to build the future of artificial intelligence, residents and experts warn that fossil fuels, secrecy, and weak regulation may be putting communities at risk.”

Ask yourself: WHO PROFITS ?
And read the comments below the video.

I am sure AI Data Centers are not going to resolve all mankind’s problems by eliminating mankind.
The data centers themselves are vulnerable, they do become attractive targets during times of war. Spreading out the data storage could make targeting more difficult or just mean total annihilation to remove the threat.
Mankind is not kind, so logically, why should AI be kind?

A few commented about solar flares blowing out all electronics

LOL. Ye olde 2012’ers :stuck_out_tongue:
