@dbass1 I’ve asked our team about this & they said that Mudita Kompakt does not support Reverse Tethering (hardwiring ethernet).
I am confused what does this mean then? Yes , calling via external apps (e.g., Telegram, Signal, Session) should work over an ethernet connection, as long as the phone can access the internet through the cable.
I am waiting for clarification on whether native calling (without an external/ third-party app) over ethernet will work on Mudita Kompakt. Our team is testing it.
@dbass1 Let’s see if I can explain it better:
When you make a regular phone call (native calling), your SIM card connects to your mobile operator’s network. That goes through cell towers, not the internet.
When you use an external app like Signal, Telegram, or WhatsApp, the call works just like a Zoom or Skype call. It doesn’t use your SIM card’s calling function at all, it just needs an internet connection (WiFi, mobile data, or ethernet). The app sends your voice as data over the internet, not as a traditional phone signal.
So in short:
- Native calling = depends on your SIM and phone signal.
- App calling = depends on internet access (works over WiFi, mobile data, or even ethernet if the phone supports it).
Hopefully that makes sense.
@urszula Not necessarily. Some carriers do support native WIFI calling and it will show in the sim settings.
You do need phone signal to authenticate the call, but the call itself happens through wifi not through the phone signal. (very useful when you live in areas that have bad phone reception but you might have good internet).
As shown here my operator supports it and I have turned it on because the sound quality is much better than regular phone service.
Obviously when there’s no wifi the call fallbacks using the phone network.
@gezimos Thanks for the clarification.
