I am not super tech savvy so I am wondering would it be possible to sideload a browser onto the kompakt or you tube? I am guessing you tube requires the google playstore correct? These are the main two temptations I would be worried about sideloading onto my kompakt because I was very badly addicted to browsing mindlessly and using you tube as well
It is conceivable that one could install APKPure on the Kompakt and then from there use the APKPure store to find and install a browser app (such as Chromium).
In contrast, I believe that the YouTube app would not work on the Kompakt without the Google Services suite, which the Kompakt does not have. One could, however, possibly visit youtube.com on the aforementioned browser app, although I imagine that video playback would be dead in the water or dreadful.
I recommend that people use a computer or a de-Googled phone to browse the Web. And, I recommend privacy-wise that one stay away from anything that requires a Google ID.
Good to know, as long as it is a pain or impossible to do that is enough friction to stop people from trying and the kompakt remains a dumb phone
Google ID is nice hell. It backs up all contatcs, pics, history, mails … on Google Servers :DDDD
You are damned once you start, you are damned if you skip Google ecosystem
You are correct. That’s why we openly said that some apps require Google services & will not work on Mudita Kompakt.
Before anyone makes a mistake buying this phone thinking certain things will or will not work: I have a Boox e-ink device as well as deGoogled phones:
YouTube will normally run without Google Play Services. There are also third-party open-source apps that play YouTube without ads and in the background. So does the Brave browser, which works rather well on e-ink. Playing video on e-ink will obviously look bad, and looking at the specs of the phone I would not expect browsing to be a good experience anyway. There are also open-source browsers with adapted lay-out for e-ink.
@nilss This is why we want to make sure that people have the right expectations. As someone who has backloaded apks, it’s important to be aware that our expectations may not be met.
You tube works without login. I opt for Vivaldi browser. I expect videos to be slow refresh, unless some tricks like Hisense are employed.
Playing offline video on VLC is Jerly. When taking camera pics also move slowly.
Taking about experience of Yota Phone 2, dont know how its back screen compare to Kompakt
@anon11367638 I remember that @kirkmahoneyphd mentioned that he experienced some issues watching a video I posted from YT because he did not have a google login.
More commercials, surely. And YT is now heavy sucking giant, which needs updated browser.
Couple that with slow refresh, I recommend either 320x or skiping YT at all, just audio formats, when on compact. Playing downloaded video via e.g. Center on Linux. Mac or PC
