Seriously considering returning my Kompakt

@nirvana Totally get you, and I understand the issues you’re having.

Just to clarify I’m not a representative of the company, I’m a user like you with fair share of issues that are causing some hassles, but I’m trying to find solutions until Mudita gives us updates. So to me you don’t come as a hater at all, simple user that expressing their experience.

I’m not audiophile, the Earpiece does sound very good to me, the loudspeaker is loud I would say but not “amazing”. I tried normal calls, wifi calling and signal calling and the sound was super clear on all of those. Same could be said with people I called they said they heard me clearly. It could be your earpiece is faulty, and see if you have wifi calling turned on because call quality can depend on your carrier.

I do have an iPhone 12 mini for smart-id & e-banking and earpiece sound quality I would say is comparable to the Kompakt.

As per the loudspeaker the only issue I have is that is too loud on it’s lowest volume setting, so hard to fall asleep to listen to something, so I use earphones instead.

@thurakanda I did get Fossify Calendar, I like the features, just didn’t have time to figure out the syncing with other calendars. Will try over the weekend.

Hi Gezimos,

No need to be an audiophile to be able to hear the distortions that were happening prior 2010 in cheapest phones… now we’re back there, as much as i would want to be back in this time of the world in terms of phones advancements i would like to have what i paid for.
People say i sound worse, without a case it is just worse without much explanation, with case on the phone they say its like through a tunnel, while on loudspeaker they hear themselves speaking.
I hear them well enough but once they laugh it gets distorted and since i have high sensitivity to high tones it just makes my head hurt …

I have time untill next friday to decide but im on the verge, there is totally no alternative in the market, minimal phone and hisense a9 pro are both higher cost and physically are too big, no possibility to have them in the pocket when on a bike so i can only go back to my iPhone se 2020 with 5 hours of battery life as of now.

Tried the Fossify calendar now. I like all the features - different kind of views, and reminders which can be customized. It’s not customized for e-ink screen of course, so readability is worse than the stock calendar, but it works. The only thing that didn’t work well IMO is that a calendar notification will not show itself on the main screen - i.e. it will not show up as “meeting with Jeff”. In order to see what the notification is about, I have to open up the calendar app itself. Not sure if there’s any way to change the settings so that the calendar can send such notifications to the main screen of the phone, kind of?

The other thing I figured out is that if I set notification type to “system”, the notification just keeps going with no way to make it stop! I had to turn off the phone to make the alarm go away.

This is why it’s important for people to test it themselves. I did test like I wrote above, and haven’t faced audio issues. My comparison for good audio would be the iPhone 12 mini, I haven’t had any phones more premium than that one.

And I understand your issue with distorted sounds, because they also hurt my head. I’m returning a pair of earphones for a similar issue.

And I do agree with your last paragraph, there’s no alternative for me either. The giant e-ink phones are tablet sized, that’s why I’m still settling to the Kompakt despite the issues.

Unless something worse happens during my testing, I have like a week left  but I hope not.

as far as im aware this isnt possible (and wont be on any device with the iphone) because the iphone doesn’t allow inbound internet via tethering. it can be used as a source device, but not the other way around

Because of lack of alternatives i’m also thinking of settling on the Kompakt but on the other hand since i did read some of threads on previous phone Pure which was not fixed after years and i cannot wait years, also some of those things are just hardware things that cannot be fixed by an update, although audio can be adjusted to some extent i have tried music from spotify on loudspeaker and im quite sure it is just loudspeaker hardware limitations …

Things like no control over notification sound/vibration and it being totally random can and should be fixed, along with non functioning gps in maps or keyboard sounds settings not working.
I have 2 days of battery life which can be explained by sideloaded spotify and messenger but i turn them off in the settings after every use to make sure they dont draw power in the next 12 hours when i dont use them so i dont know…
Also my notification light on top of the screen is not centered under the hole which is a production issue…

Speaker being that bad in 2025 has no excuses to be honest, im wondering about the actual cost to manufacture one of the devices with such low quality components.

if the call quality doesn’t fit your needs you should return the device. the speaker isnt going to change, your right its not the top of the range speaker, its good enough i would say but either you have a faulty device of you just find the audio unacceptable to your ears. software isn’t going to change that

for what its worth i havent heard anyone complain to me about hearing themselves, or have high pitched sounds. and with or without the case the call quality has been the same (the holes line up, if they dont on yours its a faulty case)

I said in one other comment, if this device was like Pure with RTOS/Mocor (that basically every new Nokia phone is based off) I would never purchase it. But because of Android is much easier to develop, I do have higher hopes that they will support it much better.

I’m not sure about your audio issues though, might be that your device is faulty. I tried to recreate the laugh caused distortion on a call a few minutes ago and it isn’t an issue on my device.

it would be great to do a video tutorial for sideloading with macOS

Yeah i think that my unit could be damaged as im wondering… why adding notification sounds or music on to the music app if the speaker cannot reproduce basically any of it?
There is just one notification alarm for calls and one for sms that has no distortions at 50% of volume, i wonder if thats intentional or just my speaker is really damaged…

When I tried that option with the Kompakt connected to the iPhone, it didn’t activate. However, when I did the same on the Mac, it worked.

I believe it can be more, depending on your use. I’m using my MK since Monday afternoon, made couple calls, sent couple text messages, no sideloading yet, 4-6 hours tethering and I’m at 47%. I quite believe I can surpass a week but that will really differ based on your use of course.

Using it with Davx and icsx

Not to defend anyone, but I’m afraid that’s the 21st century reality in IT products and software. Social media and websites with “beta” prefix", video games that require heavy patches right after premiere, new version of a browser every time they make a build (I think Opera started this rush in number increment, other browsers and Google and everyone follows), professional hardware which feels like QA is totally delegated to customers… I have few ideas where does that comes from in general, such as haste or bad balancing between aiming for perfection and accepting that things will never be perfect (I am heavily leaning towards the former which makes me unable to finish a lot of things I start), or at least paying enough attention to details.

In all honesty, so far all my callers are satisfied with my voice and likewise, perhaps because VoLTE kicking in in my locations, not sure. I have odd feeling about the sound recorder quality but not about the call audio input. Not sure why is that.
Agreed on the loudspeakers not being loud enough sometimes.
Coming from a dumbphone environment for a while, it’s a pity that those OS are oftentimes bugged (even different Nokias running same “S30+” can have different features and glitches) and audio call is clearly low-end. Also, inferior text input experience compared to old Nokias/Symbian and basically anything else. The only dumbphone I’d consider today is the most expensive myPhone phones (yeah, sounds like a joke but it’s legit) but it feels a bit bulky as it’s originally a brand of senior phones (they even have a landline-like Android phone lol). At least here in Poland, there’s no reasonably-priced and well-made bar phone (for, say, $200 which could be a sensible price for the expectation).

Make sure Wi-Fi works well before going Wi-Fi Calling (low latency is a must and it’s not always the case in residential areas if 2.4 GHz is the only option). IMO it’s a money-saver when in a hotel abroad assuming their Wi-Fi works fine.

IMO I’d consider if you got a faulty hardware MK.
For alternatives, someone mentioned Sidephone - this might be spot on for many.

Agreed, calendar notification on the lock screen (or an indicator under date and time on the main screen) feels like a must, especially that the calendar app icon is not on the main screen.

Yeah same here that is honestly all I care about, can it make calls and texts, after that I am not using the e-reader, not sideloading anything. Just needs significant updates to calendar and directions tool
