Raised by YouTube

I just read an OLD article from the Atlantic…from 2018- “Raised by YouTube.” It discusses the rise and impact of ChuChu TV, a major YouTube channel for children’s content.
It details how Vinoth Chandar, the CEO, started the channel with simple animations for his daughter, which quickly gained popularity. ChuChu TV now competes with traditional children’s entertainment like Sesame Street and Disney, boasting billions of views globally.

The videos are meticulously designed to capture toddlers’ attention, using YouTube’s analytics to fine-tune their approach.

However, the article raises concerns about the potential impact of such content on young children, emphasizing that the rapid, visually stimulating videos might not be the most educational. It contrasts this with the carefully researched and educational content produced by traditional TV shows like Sesame Street.

What do you guys think about the transformative role of YouTube in children’s media consumption? Do you think there is a need for more careful consideration of its effects on young minds?

Let’s discuss.

As long parents need a pacifier because they are to busy with themselves, then chuchu/ chacha or whatever channel is the best pacifier and thus the best way to dull the young minds. :expressionless:

@mausje75 I’m more concerned with the long-term consequences of exposing young children to prolonged digital technology and videos on YouTube. We already know that frequent exposure to fast-paced, highly stimulating content has a negative impact on out attention spans. I wrote about a phenomenon called ‘popcorn brain’ on the blog:

I’m afraid that getting used to content like this will make it harder for children to engage with slower, more in-depth activities like reading or critical thinking.

You can see that for yourself when you watch old cartoons or series from the 80`s. That’s really slow in comparison to now. I understand what you are saying

Was this in the US? Anyone notice that it’s produced by Harvey Weinstein?

@craigjarrett This video show what screen time withdrawal looks like in a 17 month toddler.

This mother basically said, “I wish I could turn back the hands of time , I never would have introduced Tv to my baby.”
