Questions before buying Kompakt :)

Hello everyone,

I’m thinking about trading in my GrapheneOS smartphone for a Mudita Kompakt, but I still have a few questions

  • Mudita says that the Kompakt is “degoogled.” Is that really 100% true?

  • I’m thinking about using InkOS. Is that also 100% Google-/tracker-free?

  • Is it possible to connect to the internet via Ethernet with a USB-C adapter?

  • Has anyone ever installed Mullvad (VPN) via sideloading and can confirm that it works?

  • Is there any way to use Mudita Center without a computer, e.g. in a browser? I only have a GrapheneOS tablet…

  • Does mobile data work without any problems if I want to use a browser on the go, for example?

  • The PURE was heavily advertised for its low SAR value, but I don’t see anything about that for the Kompakt. Does anyone know anything about this?

  • I know that CalmCast exists, but theoretically it would also be possible to download podcasts as mp3s and then play them in the music player, right?

  • Can I simply transfer files (e.g., mp3s) back and forth via USB stick?

  • I currently use Organic-/Comaps and wonder if it’s better than the pre-installed maps app?

  • I’ve read that some people use Signal/Molly. Does it work without any problems? I wish there were photos/videos of it

  • I currently use Obtainium to install/update apps directly from GitHub. Has anyone tried this on the Kompakt?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance for your help

Seems so.

Yup. @gezimos can confirm.

I’ve seen someone trying but not sure.

Seems like any Android phone in that regard.

No, Kompakt has more average SAR. Ultra-low SAR of Pure is a double-edged sword that killed the project IMHO.

Yes.

I didn’t try personally but should work like with any Android [12] phone. ‘Should’ doesn’t mean it would tho, there are some features that are scrubbed off of AOSP 12 when moving to Kompakt OS K. I hope someone tested this already and has answers to other questions of yours.

Thanks! Can anyone else help with the other questions?
What about the colors? Tending towards the grey because i have the (grey alarm from Mudita) and seems the color is good if you donˋt like to see fingerprints all over  And the e-ink screen looks greyish to me as well…
Or is another color better in your opinion (and why)?

@Nelu I can help answer some questions as well:

I’m happy to hear that you’re considering Mudita Kompakt. It really is a cool phone.

Mudita says that the Kompakt is “degoogled.” Is that really 100% true?

YES. That’s true. It’s important to keep in mind that apps which require Google services might not function correctly on Mudita Kompakt.

I’m thinking about using InkOS. Is that also 100% Google-/tracker-free?

That’s for @gezimos to answer.

Is it possible to connect to the internet via Ethernet with a USB-C adapter?

I have not tried this, but maybe others can comment.

Has anyone ever installed Mullvad (VPN) via sideloading and can confirm that it works?

I haven’t tried this, but maybe others have.

Is there any way to use Mudita Center without a computer, e.g. in a browser? I only have a GrapheneOS tablet…

This might be an issue for you. Although I do not have a lot of experience with GrapheneOS devices, I’m not sure Mudita Center can run on GrapheneOS. We currently have a Windows, MacOS & Linux laptop apps.

Does mobile data work without any problems if I want to use a browser on the go, for example?

For me it works great. I use the BRAVE browser & I don’t have any issues.

The PURE was heavily advertised for its low SAR value, but I don’t see anything about that for the Kompakt. Does anyone know anything about this?

Mudita Kompakt is not a LOW-SAR phone like Mudita Pure.

I know that CalmCast exists, but theoretically it would also be possible to download podcasts as mp3s and then play them in the music player, right?

That’s actually what I do. I download MP3 of my audiobooks, long-form articles & podcast episodes & listen to them in the Mudita Music Player.
For Audiobooks, you may like Simple AudioBook Player. It works well with eInk.

Can I simply transfer files (e.g., mp3s) back and forth via USB stick?

I have tired a USB stick, but a MicroSD cards works just as well.

I currently use Organic-/Comaps and wonder if it’s better than the pre-installed maps app?

I’m satisfied with the Native Mudita Maps apps, but I’ve also tried HereWeGo maps & those work well. I just like the design of the native Mudita Maps app.

I’ve read that some people use Signal/Molly. Does it work without any problems? I wish there were photos/videos of it

I’ve got both Signal & WhatsApp on my Mudita Kompakt & they work just fine. Obviously the user exerience is not as it is on a traditional smartphone, the colors are greyscale etc.

I currently use Obtainium to install/update apps directly from GitHub. Has anyone tried this on the Kompakt?

I either download apps from APKMirror or directly from the app website, like Signal & Whatsapp.
