Press [1] on Mudita Kompakt to Dial Voicemail Number?

Might we get an update to MuditaOS K (now at 1.1.1) so that we can press [1] on the Kompakt to dial our carrier’s voicemail number?

Coincidentally, I asked this same question three years ago about the Pure. But, I never took possession of a Pure cellphone, so I do not know what happened with respect to the Pure.

Here is that post with the same question:

When I press [1] on the Kompakt today, the call ends almost immediately, and I see this:

In contrast, when I call my USA carrier’s voicemail telephone number, I am able to reach voicemail, and the word “Voicemail” – which is NOT in my contacts list – then appears at the top of the Phone app’s “Recents” tab:

That “Voicemail” item on the “Recents” tab is usable. But, once Mudita makes it possible to clear the “Recents” tab, it will disappear. Yes, I can create an entry in my contacts list for my carrier’s voicemail number, but dialing voicemail in this way will require finding that entry each time in the contacts list.

Being able to press [1] to reach voicemail would be the best way to do so.

Thanks for your attention to this!

i have the exact same issue. im not sure if i get sms for voicemails (i havent tested) but the ‘1’ option doesnt work. i get the same error, apparently it might have something to do with the dual sim, but the UI doesn’t have options to disable it

ive not done much other testing yet, i dont know if its just an issue with this dialer app…

press and hold 1 to call voicemail is standard in the UK to the extent it is literally the carriers instructions. no setup, just press and hold 1

@kirkmahoneyphd as far as I know, pressing 1 to access voicemail is a widely used shortcut, but it is not universal across all networks.

I will make this suggestion.

@eden who’s your network provider?

EE in the UK

EE’s settings are otherwise automatically picked up, ive had no other issues. its not related to visual voicemai (i disabled this).

i tried another dialer and it has the same issue, so i assume its a OS settings issue/conflict somewhere where i may not have visibility in the UI @urszula

EE does not automatically send SMS notifications for new voicemails. However, you can enable Remote Access Alerts, which send a text message each time your voicemail is accessed from another phone. To activate:

  1. Call your voicemail (press and hold 1).
  2. Press ***** to skip to the main menu.
  3. Select Option 3 for settings and features.
  4. Select Option 4 to toggle remote access alerts on or off.

thats the bit that doesnt work

I have only one SIM in my Kompakt, so it has nothing to do with the dual SIM, unless you were referring to the dual-SIM feature and not to the idea of two SIMs present.

I should have included “and hold” in my references to pressing [1].

Pressing and holding [1] on my Kompakt (on T-Mobile USA) does not dial my voicemail number. All that it does is play the touchtone associated with the [1] key until I lift my finger. No dialing occurs.

the feature, not a sim being present, id briefly read some suggestions that phones with 2 sim slots might have someissues

exact same issue for me

I can confirm that pressing & holding [1] on any other cellphone that I have had on the T-Mobile USA network does access voicemail.

Dear Kirk, pressing and holding [1] doesn’t call voicemail because Mudita OS K does not have a quick contacts feature.
If you were to rate this issue’s urgency and importance on a scale of 1-10 where 10 is superurgent or superimportant and 1 is “basically whatever”, what would it be?

BTW–and it in no way influences neither urgency nor importance, it’s just a personal anecdote–I think I got my last voicemail years ago. Maybe even before Covid? It’s amazing to see how different tools of telecommunication differ country to country, continent to continent.

Sounds incredible to me. Just out of curiosity, how do administrations, utilities, children’s schools and doctors’ secretariats get in touch with you? Email? Here in France, all these are done by phone, and therefore often they leave a voicemail. My friends and family also ring me (but I think that’s because I’ve never had an Android or ios phone, they make an exception for me).

Mostly email, regular mail for important, official business, rarely a phone call – but if I don’t answer, they call again some other time.

I can only agree with you. I’ve had a cell phone for 26 years, and in that time, I can count my group text messages on one hand. I probably sent the last one sometime around 9/11. It’s hard for me to imagine that this will still be a feature in 2025, but I learned that in this forum. Different countries, different customs, as we say.

is the quick contacts feature what causes the ‘connection problem or invalid MMI code’ error? because the hold 1 isnt necessarily the issue, its just a side effect of the fact that ‘1’ the number which dials voicemail, doesn’t work at all.

to give you an indication EE for example doesnt give customers the long way round to check voicemail via the full alternative phone number to call, their primary and first instruction to all customers is to ‘press and hold 1’ to access your voicemail. and so i would say that countries where this method is relatively prevalent it may be important to have it working on the kompakt.

you’re average person is going to try pressing 1, see that it doesn’t work, and assume the kompakt may be faulty since they’re simply following the standard way of accessing voicemail.

so id say since the call functionality is one of the primary features of the phone (its not like there’s many other features left by design  ), then this type of call functionality should in some sense ‘just work’

@aleksander:

5, speaking on behalf of those who are accustomed to pressing and holding [1] to check and retrieve voicemail…

I would rate it a 10, if I had not found a workaround.

My workaround is:

  1. Create an entry in my contacts list for my provider’s voicemail telephone number.
  2. Make that entry a favorite, so that it appears on the “Favorites” tab.

What is interesting about the Kompakt’s behavior with respect to accessing voicemail is this:

  • Before I added my provider’s (T-Mobile USA’s) voicemail-access telephone number to my contacts list, I simply dialed that telephone number (a ten-digit number here in the USA). What appeared on the “Recents” tab was the label “Voicemail” for that call – even though I never added that TN to my contacts! So, somehow the Kompakt learned through that telephone call that I was accessing my voicemail.
  • Now that I have “T-Mobile Voicemail” in my contacts list and on my “Favorites” tab, when I tap that entry on the “Favorites” tab and then hang up and look on the “Recents” tab, I see “Voicemail” as the latest telephone number called. Again, this tells me that the Kompakt knows that I just accessed my voicemail, and it ignores the name for it that I have in my contacts.
  • Whenever I access my voicemail, I see “Voice Mail” at the top of a keypad screen with a hang-up icon button at the bottom. Again, the Kompakt somehow knows that I am in the middle of accessing voicemail, although it spells it as “Voice Mail” instead of as “Voicemail” (a curious distinction that appears with Google Android, LineageOS, and CalyxOS, too).

@aleksander, I just checked the offline user manual on my minimalist, AOSP-based Sunbeam Wireless F1 Orchid.

Sunbeam uses the term “Speed Dial” to refer to being able to dial a telephone number by pressing and holding any numeric key.

Sunbeam excludes the [1] key because Sunbeam assigns and dedicates that to accessing voicemail, which Sunbeam’s operating system – BasicOS – determines automatically.

Here are screenshots from that portion of the user manual on my Orchid:

I never have to know what the voicemail telephone number is for assignment to the [1] key’s speed dial.

  • BasicOS determines it for me on my Orchid.
  • LineageOS determined it for me on my deGoogled Pixel 4a.
  • CalyxOS determines it for me on my deGoogled Pixel 6.
  • MuditaOS K, too, should be able to determine it for me on my Kompakt!

What about Keys [2] through [9]? – Older vs. Recent AOSP

According to my research, BasicOS can support speed dialing for keys [2] through [9] because Sunbeam derived BasicOS from an older version of AOSP.

Here is a snippet from wikiHow about the topic of speed dialing:

In contrast to BasicOS, both LineageOS and CalyxOS are derived from recent versions of AOSP, which do not support speed dialing for keys [2] through [9].

Back to the Question of Pressing and Holding Key [1]

Unlike BasicOS, all three of LineageOS, CalyxOS, and MuditaOS K are based on recent versions of AOSP.

Both LineageOS and CalyxOS support dialing voicemail through pressing and holding key [1] (as does Google Android, for that matter).

So, MuditaOS K should be able to do this, too!

Depends on the person I guess, to me the Eink screen is the sole reason I bought this phone.

On the other hand I’ve never sent or received a voicemail in my entire life, and where I am from I don’t know anybody that has used that feature in any phone in the past 20+ years.
