And when you voice your concerns, you are targeted as not civilised.
How dare you speak up…
That goes against the “ethos” ![]()
Yep, just buy and shut up, and let us do “our best”. 5 years later… still the same.
my goodness this blew up overnight
Oh yeah it did.
But honestly I wonder how big Mudita team is, and now I looked it up. It’s not a full-size developer team. It’s a team adequate for kickstarter-driven niche projects and keep in mind, they are probably torn between other products’ support and development as well.
This, plus CI/CD, Scrum, design templates, QA, documentation, whole formal/project dance around coding itself can eat up a portion of time.
Maybe currently it is an overburden, maybe it’s a matter of setting priorities straight. Given the forum traffic one could get an impression that MK is no. 1 buzzmaker and so all efforts perhaps should disregard Bell/Harmony for few weeks.
I don’t know, I’m not a professional software developer in any way to judge this properly.
What would help indeed, is either contracting additional workforce for the time being or enabling at least volunteers to tackle this, be it open-source via Github, be it darn NDA if someone keeps bringing this up as a concern. Stuff can be done with AI today with this whole vibe coding. It comes at an expense of your own brain, again (Vibe Coding Is Creating Braindead Coders | N’s Blog), but if anyone tried hard, they could replicate MK apps functionality in no-time.
But I tend to believe it would be most likely a matter of developers being swamped with different priorities or with procedural overhead. Been there, done that.
Indeed. These days people can collaborate online, it doesn’t require anyone to move to Poland. Put the product and its users first for God’s sake, then the success will follow automatically.
I have to agree with you here. I was really happy when I first got the phone, for the last 2 weeks, as it was a major upgrade from all other dumbphones. But the fact that Mudita is not clear about their lack of support for MMS messaging is really disappointed to me. I read other posts mentioning this is an issue with US carriers (I tried going into settings and Verizon doesn’t have a MMS pin that I can enter).
I downgraded to a dumphone because I still needed a device that could communicate, but this phone can’t do that, I can’t justify the price tag. I can’t use it as a daily driver because of all its issues, and I’m not willing to drop 400 bucks on a phone to play around with eInk Android sideloaded fiddling.
Mudita should just clearly state that this phone is not supported fully in the US, so users can know that going in. Again, I purchased this phone expecting it to be able to work for me, but it seems that’s not the case. And if my assessment is correct, that leaves a more bitter taste in my mouth due to unmet expectations, than other phones which might technically have less features but can actually send and receive texts reliably. I wish I saw this thread before I bought the phone. But I think I’m gonna have to return it…
I hear the frustration here, and a lot of it is valid. The update pace is slow, and I get why people are concerned about Android 12 security and the development approach.
That said, I wanted to share my experience because it might help some folks decide if this phone still works for them:
On @Urszula & Support: She’s been consistently responsive when individuals reach out, and while she can’t always give us the answers we want, she does get information to/from the team. Not every company has someone this accessible.
On Transparency: Mudita publishes roadmaps and keeps us updated—even when it’s challenging given their team size. Other minimalist phone companies either don’t publish roadmaps or haven’t updated theirs in months.
On Sideloading: The ability to sideload apps means you can go your own way and leave the suggested ecosystem. Yes, it’s frustrating to have to do it, but compared to truly locked-down minimalist phones, having this option means you can actually make the Kompakt work for your needs. The hardware + e-ink + this flexibility is still a rare combination.
My experience as a US customer: It works 100% on Mint Mobile (T-Mobile network). I get voicemails (notification coming soon per roadmap), group messages, and I travel internationally with Mint’s international plan without issues. Do I wish there was a timer? Yes. A podcast tool? Yes. Music folders? Absolutely (coming per the roadmap). I could rectify some of this by sideloading from Aurora, but I’ve deliberately chosen not to go down that path…
What I value most is Mudita’s privacy approach: minimal data sharing, downloadable offline maps, and the hardware kill switch. The offline+ mode is a gem. And honestly, given how many times T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon have been hacked, I’m not convinced the big providers are more secure with far more of my data.
My take: Individual frustrations are completely understandable. The development pace is what it is given the team size. But when I compare Mudita to other minimalist phone companies, they set the bar for transparency and community engagement. If the current state doesn’t work for you, that’s completely fair—I’m just offering a different perspective for anyone weighing whether to stick it out.
I’m really looking forward to the next update—folders and ability to create group messaging. Once those are there, I’ll feel whole. And if the lack of a timer ever becomes unbearable, I can always sideload one easily.
My exact thought. I also agree with the others which is why I made the post about the road map being disappointing. It just seems like basic things are being stretched out like they are pushing a bunch of updates when really they should push all those basic things into one update. It really does not take long to add/fix those things.
Theres a dev who created a lineageos gsi for the minimal phone and they were saiyng if they got a mudita phone that they can create a gsi for it. Maybe we should all pitch in money for them to buy a phone? lol.
This is their discord server Dumbphones & More
Minimal company actually hired them even being from a different country because of their great capabilities.
Same here, I too am a US customer on Mint Mobile. I have been using my Kompakt daily ever since I first received it at the beginning of September and I have never had a single issue with its phone functionality whatsoever. For me it works and has always worked as a phone. I don’t know what it is, but I have seen several posts on the forum of people having issues with its basic phone functionality, and that just has not been my experience at all. Is it the carrier? I don’t know what it is that is causing people to have issues with the phone functionality part.
I won’t say the Kompakt doesn’t have its shortcomings though. In fact I made a whole post detailing everything I would like to see included in future updates. I also agree that Mudita’s working pace is slow as molasses , but I’m confused about the claims I’ve seen that the phone doesn’t even work as a phone. I guess I should consider myself fortunate that I haven’t had any issues.
Like the etch a sketch suggestion.
You know what? I’d be down to support this. Let’s get a few of us in on this and then the cost won’t be that bad.
Yes! if anyone is reading this please reply if you would be in on this. This can fix so many issues with the phone having a working gsi.
whats a gsi
Yeah, I feel this. Went back to my regular phone last week. Got screen time to work good and lock apps/websites that are addictive, gave partner the password, my social media cosuption problems solved. I also fell a bit for the Mudita marketing.
The phone has incredible potential, I admit - no doubt about it! But in its current state it just wasn’t that good i eventually realized. Camera stopped working randomly, fingerprint sensor broke permanently, support was unresponsive, native maps couldn’t find addresses I was looking for and could easily find on other maps apps, alarms skipped, message threads didn’t load, calls were quiet, podcasts stopped after X seconds after letting them play, and on and on it goes…
It was a good run but I’m pretty happpy being back on my regular phone for now. Waiting to see how this project turns out, might go back at some point but def not now.
I’m down to see what happens, hoping 10-20 people would contribute. ![]()
Well, I totally support this idea. But you know what I would ask for: please, by all means, make sure it’s secure as a fortress ![]()
I don’t want to sound like a brand ambassador, but I bought the Kompakt based on information publicly available — and I got exactly what I paid for. Is it a perfect device? Absolutely not: the screen should be better, the blue LED backlight is a really dumb decision, battery life is lower than I’d like, the accessories are a mess, the glass feels awful, the vibration motor is weak, speaker quality is stuck in the 2010s, and the software is basically in an alpha stage.
But still, I subjectively got what I paid for. Did I know the Kompakt is built on an outdated chipset that drains power like crazy — one even the manufacturer probably forgot about? Yes. Did I know about the old Android version? Sure, but I didn’t really think much about security issues back then.
Is this device more of a marketing product? Absolutely. Does it have a future for users? If enthusiasts were allowed to get deeper access (which unfortunately won’t happen) — definitely yes. From a technically literate perspective, this is outdated hardware with weak, outdated software. To overcome that unpleasant “outdatedness,” the device needs life breathed into it — but the last update, which turned a completely awful music app into a slightly less awful one, showed that Mudita lacks the people who could make that happen.
So, here are my conclusions: it’s a raw product, but it does what the manufacturer claims. When the initial excitement faded, I started seeing it more soberly. And honestly — the only thing that still makes me love this phone today is the small e‑ink display.
And one more thing: would I return it and choose something else? Hell no! If we stop buying products from small companies like this, ten years from now we’ll all end up with eight‑inch iPhone 63s.
Can I change the company’s vision on community involvement? Probably not. But I sincerely wish the team to be proud of more than just the Offline+ button.
Anyone interested in the project:
This discord server is called “Dumbphones & More” it has been started by Charlie when they started the LineageOS for MinimalPhone.
Just to clarify, Charlie started the LIneageOS for Minimal phone and then they were hired by Minimal to work on their actual MinimalOS.
They wanted to start messing with the Kompakt earlier on, but like said above they didn’t have a device.
If anyone is interested in the Discord server you can find links for donations to Charlie in case you want to support her working on LineageOS for the Kompakt when they get the device.
I feel the same way regarding the Light Phone II to which I’ve been using as my only mobile device for the past three or so years now: I want to say it’s so mediocre and that’s why I stick with it but that would be a bit disingenuous.
It’s due for an upgrade given a shattered screen and the up volume button no longer working. I’m saving up for the Kompakt - I like the user interface design! And perhaps the texting experience is a bit better than the aforementioned?
