I went to open an email on my device and tried opening a pdf I was sent. However, I was unfortunately unable to view it, both in the app (Thunderbird) and throught Gmail on the web browser. Also unable to view it after clicking “download” and trying to view it from there. Is this just a limitation of the device? Or is there a way I can view these. It is going to be something I will likely need for work.

Go to E-reader native app and look there

Or you can install (side load) any pdf reader. I used Adobe acrobat

I think the problem might be to assign PDF files to a default application because this dialogue is missing on Kompakt. Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks! It looks like they did show up there after I downloaded from email and I could open them!!

That would be good to know, but looks like they do open in E-reader for me after I’ve downloaded them

The way it works for me is that you do have to download it.
For example, I after checking in for my flight, I usually send a PDF boarding card to my Kompakt from the web Whatspp page. Then I have to download the file. It will then show up in the eReader of Mudita Kompakt.
