Parent’s view of Kompakt

I’ve posted my review and setup for getting the Kompakt for my kid.

YouTube review

TL;DR it’s fine and a substantial upgrade from their Nokia brick.

Three improvement asks:

  1. Separate volume controls for calls and notifications
  2. Clock on lock screen
  3. Committing to security updates

How about the offline switch?

It’s there… but I don’t see the point of that for my kid. I told him what it was and he was unsurprisingly nonplussed. That could be because he isn’t a fan of notifications anyway and usually has the sound off unless we tell him it needs to be on. This is why having a separate volume control for calls would be so helpful… no disturbance on texts but if we needed to ring him we know it would get his attention.

I mean, other parents have expressed their concerns about the offline switch here on the forum, that is that they are worried it would be shut off too easily by their kid and then they are not accessible (intentionally or unintentionally).

@thurakanda I posted a video on the forum awhile back (gotta look through to find it) that that the OFFLINE+ switch does have resistance, so it’s not super easy to just turn it on accidentally.
However, if the child knows about it & the intentionally turns it on- that’s a different story entirely.

I struggle to see that actually happening. It is the same type of switch that was on the iPhone and that happened zero times in my experience. When you put it in a case too it is further ‘protected’ from just random budges in trousers.

Yeah, but seriously… if the kid wanted the phone off, they could just turn it off. Just as with another phone they could plop on airplane mode. It just feels like a non-issue to me as I don’t see it happening accidentally.
