I have just updated to 1.5.0 and have initial feedback in case anyone would find it helpful.
I downloaded the OS through the official updated up. At one point it just showed a message that a new update is available and everything went automatically and smoothly.
1. Nothing’s broken, it seems. The update went smoothly and everything that worked before, seems to work now too
2. The new keyboard is great, there’s autocorrect, word prediction, and multilanguage support. I don’t think there’s swipe typing, but that would be odd experience on slow-refresh screen anyway. The only snag I can see is that languages appear to be tied to their default keyboard layouts - for example, I use English, Polish, and French. English and Polish are fine, but French defaults to the AZERTY layout which I never learned. German appears to have a Swiss language (not keyboard, but language) option, but there’s no French Swiss version. It looks like there is a menu option to add “custom input styles” which then lets you browse through language/keyboard pairs, but when I pick French QWERTY and try to add it, nothing happens.
3. GPS is still pretty slow. I use OsmAnd and it takes a while to acquire connection. My local public transport app which uses location to determine the nearest bus stop for trip planning fails to acquire location at all once or twice, and then finally seems to get it after a few attempts. This is after I specifically enabled assisted GPS in settings (which by the way is not super obvious that it can and should be done - it would be good if there’s a little prompt after the reboot following 1.5 installation).
So, actually, now that I tried again, it did let me add French QWERTY. Something’s changed, but I don’t know what exactly. But in the end, I have the layout I wanted.
After enabling the correct layout, one more step is required, but this should not be necessary after enabling it.
So I had to go to “Languages” after enabling the correct layout, uncheck “System languages”, and then select the added custom layout, and disable the original language. It would have made more sense if that had worked automatically.
Anyway, now I’m also using the layout I’m used to.
Man, just want the update to flow to my phone - the wait is always the hardest I mean, I can wait as long as needed when I know the udpate is still in the works…but now that it is live and being pushed…the wait is R.O.U.G.H.
The AOSP keyboard has always worked like that, anyone used to the default Android Keyboard (not Gboard but AOSP keyboard) knows how to use it. @mudita please don’t change that.
Ok thanks. This is my first AOSP device. I just thought it’s weird to set the language, then the layout, and then the layout in the language section again lol. It’s all good if it works.
Still no Clear Calls/Call Log from the phone. This is a basic every day, every phone feature and a major security/privacy flaw that needs to be fixed promptly.
So so happy with this update. I love the old school emojis (edit: forum will auto transform the old school into the yellow newish ones) and will use them as my standard to go with the overall vibe. I know I am years out but I hope there will be a 5G Kompakt available 3-5 years from now. This phone is “IT.” I must confess to CalmCast and QR as my sideloads but really, could not be happier. I just got my update, and the new keyboard is so wonderful. Faster and smarter and makes life easier.
I don’t see emojis though? There used to be a smily face on my keyboard where I had access to a limited number of emojis. That is now gone. I don’t see anywhere where an emoji library would live. It seems others have them?
Finally got my update this morning! Wow the keyboard really does make a world of difference. I was using FUTO but this is genuinely so much better, I no longer feel like I have to pull out my bluetooth keyboard to type out a lengthy text message. Haven’t tested the new GPS yet but I intend to - my hope is that eventually the native Maps app will fulfill my needs well enough that I’ll be able to use it exclusively (currently using Waze, sadly I am not one of those people who is confident driving in unfamiliar territory without turn-by-turn instructions). I also agree with the folks who feel that it’s overall just smoother to use now. I’ve noticed even tapping my security code in to open it feels more fluid and less delayed now.
I just want to update. The new stock keyboard is now MUCH better than FUTA, and I have since uninstalled FUTA and am using the stock mudita keyboard exclusively now.
I like the update but had to go here to figure out how to access the smileys. Maybe I missed something but I doubt many will figure that out on their own.
I was quite used to the old way of long tap for alt characters that I’m not sure I like the new way that forces me to touch down while making my selection. Hoping for a nordic/swedish keyboard option in the future that would remove that problem.
New keyboard seems great, but I rely on voice-to-text for a lot of my communication, so I have had to stick with FUTO keyboard for now, which still works exceptionally well.
