Optomized vs. Not?

Okay…so I’m thinking of purchasing the Mudita Kompakt to see if it’s the phone for me. I just don’t understand the difference between North American Optomized and non-optomized version. I also see that if I want to get the phone with the case and screen protector, there is a bundle with the non-optimized version, but if you want the optomized version, you’d need to buy it together seperately (not in a bundle). Can someone clarify this for me, please?

There are two versions:

  • Global-optimized version
  • North-America-optimized version

You should pick a version based on which 4G/LTE bands your carrier uses.

I posted a lot about this elsewhere on the Mudita Forum.

Both have a bundle. The NA optimized bundle is here: Mudita Store | Mudita Kompakt - a minimalist phone with E Ink® screen.

What made you change your mind? I remember you were pretty set on the Light phone 3

Well, I saw the description comparing the two, but I couldn’t find the information on the specific bands each have. Since I’m from North America, I was going to purchase that one (and it even says it works in other countries, just not as reliable), however, due to my love for traveling, I was split about purchasing the globalized one. That’s probably the main reason I felt the need to start the topic.

I searched the topics for something similar at the time and couldn’t find the information I needed, so I wanted to open it up to everyone in the community to see what version they purchased as well as figure out which version I should.

I’m sorry, I looked on your profile and looked up bands and couldn’t find exactly where you wrote the difference between the two, otherwise would probably have looked there.

Good question. It’s mostly the e-ink screen. Previously, I wasn’t a fan of 3 things with the Mudita Kompakt: 1) Camera, 2) icon-based and 3) build/repairability.

I’ve changed my mind about the camera. Although it isn’t vieweable on the phone, as people have shared photos once it’s been plugged in, the quality of the phone is not bad! Or at least in my opinion. I don’t mind if I can’t see it right away.

The icon-based style can be changed. I do prefer words only, such as on The LP3. However clearly, on all 3 phones (The Minimal Phone, Kompakt & Light Phone 3), there is a way to make the same layout. So, that’s wonderful.

I was leaning more towards The Minimal Phone since it’s basically a smartphone with an e-ink screen. Truth be told, I don’t need all the capabilities of a smartphone, though. I just preferred the idea you can adjust the e-ink speed and contrast. However, currently there is no actual promise of a de-googled version. It just says it might come in the future.

So, that leaves with the the Kompakt. I’d probably sideload at minimum 2 extra apps, maybe 5. And if it is possible to sideload and not see the black icons, but instead, just the words, then I don’t really care that the icons don’t match the apps it comes with.

I’m still keeping my LP3 order. I just think I actually do need to have both of them in hand to see which is best for me. I know multiple people who have had the chance to check both of them out in-person and give me their review. And I’ve seen a ton of video reviews. I just don’t feel certain at all after both those things, so that is what is prompting me to pre-order before the price rises.

Overall, my flexibility (not so certain that the Kompakt isn’t the one) and opinion shifting towards Kompakt-friendly really comes down to those 3 things. I need to re-check the repairability. I know that the phone comes with a good warranty, but it has to be shipped. I’m guessing we can’t repair anything ourselves or take it anywhere local. So, that part I don’t really like still.

I’m willing to pay to check it out in person mostly for the e-ink screen, rounded edges & the Offline+. Those are the things I find very valueable in the Kompakt.
