Has anyone sideloaded openbubbles to MK? I’m coming from Apple & majority of my contacts are in that universe. Thanks for any tips!
Yes I have, it works well.
Can you tell me a bit about your set up, and how it works? I would like to put my SIM in the MK so I receive calls on it, but keep my phone number tied to iMessage and receive my texts via open bubbles.
I have Verizon on my iPhone, I was originally planning to switch over fully but Verizon wouldn’t work without lots of APN hoops to jump through, using forwarding and OpenBubbles with my iPhone feels like a good compromise if you’re able to keep your iPhone stored away somewhere and not touch it.
Once I realized this I went to T-mobile & got a new line, put the sim in and it works fine.
Add the aurora store to side-load, here’s a vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjJHicALcyc
So I still have my iPhone but just don’t use it. Have been keeping it at the bottom of my backpack and charge it once per week, I leave it turned on to ensure forwarding works.
To forward calls dial *72 then your new #, all calls to your iphone calls are routed to your new #.
I paid for an SMS Forwarding app that works through Apple shortcuts primarily to get 2FA codes sent to my email, costs like $7 per month, which is lame but whatever (the SMS forwarding app can forward all messages to email or text but when I tested the forwarding of all messages it would send the messages as one contact and wouldn’t say who sent it, so I was getting different messages from different people in the same thread and I didn’t know who sent each message, so I turned off the SMS forward to SMS messages on the phone.)
So I use the shortcuts and SMS Forwarding app to send 2FA codes to my email. Instructions on the SMS Forwarding app are simple.
Install OpenBubbles from the Auora store and set it up on your Mac and it works well, sends iMessages no problem, can view peoples locations, and technically facetime though it’s only the rear camera and is trash video.
Apps I sideloaded that work well, pretty much everything I need:
-Audible
-Bitwarden
-Chase
-DuckDuck Go
-Filen
-Mulvad VPN
-OpenBubbles
-Perplexity
-ProtonMail
-Charles Schwab
-Signal
-Spotify
-Waze
-Yubico Authenticator (I use this where possible for 2FA codes)
lmk if you have any other questions!

Thank you for the detailed response! So you technically have 2 phone #’s, and have everything from your old # routed to your new one?
Do you have to keep your iPhone on your person for all of this to work? Is it possible to leave it at home and still have openbubbles, call forwarding etc connectivity?
I’m also on Verizon, so I’ll update you which how it goes with getting the phone set up. Did you try going to a Verizon store for help?
Yes I have 2 phones and 2 numbers, everything from my iPhone is routed to my new #.
You can leave your iPhone at home and it will work as long as it is turned on and charged. Yeah I went to the verizon store, they told me the imei is not compatible with the network. Mudita says you can edit some APN settings or something, after they promised it would work with Verizon and Verizon explicitly told me it would not, then being told bla bla radio tests bla bla, I looked for a work around instead of troubleshotting Muditas problems. 2 out of 3 of the biggest networks in the US (Verizon & AT&T) don’t work out of the box and it’s wild that they advertised that they would.
If you have a physical sim on your iPhone you can try putting it in your Mudita, maybe it will work with Verizon?
