Not everyone uses the Mudita Kompakt as you expect

I think it is important to leave my review here since I purchased this phone for a very different reason than most people here.

What I am noticing is people purchasing Mudita products because they want 1) privacy 2) less time away from the phone

I don’t want or care for this. I want to use my device as much as possible, I want it to be my companion and I am content using it up to 6 hours a day to kill time. The issue here is content. As an individual with attention problems and a young adult that grew up with tech all around me I have always been very keen to use it and I never saw much of a problem with it until recent years when I realised that none of the old internet remains and most of what I see now is just companies battling for my attention and trying to sell me crap. Since I have attention problems it was very easy for my mind to be manipulated and sucked into the doomscroll. While in the past some of this was informative and interesting now the general information space online has shifted to mostly shocking, scary or ragebaiting content. It is unfortunate that we live in times where people have to resort to this. But nevertheless, I never wanted a phone that is a complete disconnect, I still wanted to talk to my friends, play games and read a lot and listen to a lot of music I just didn’t want a device that was always trying to keep all of my attention and make me feel bad and keep me addicted. For fucks sakes, why are there ADS in the Iphone SETTINGS? I have grown up with the idea that the settings or storage tab is always private and for my eyes only. So this kind of move is just unacceptable.

Keeping all of this in mind what can I say about the Mudita? I have had it for 2 weeks now and I absolutely love it! Ever since starting to use it I have really felt my mind slow down and be less overstimulated, I have started sleeping better and even dreaming again after many years of not dreaming!

I am eternally grateful for the Mudita team for creating such a wonderful product!

I have made this review, however, to share a different perspective. I am not unhappy with the Mudita, it has all the features I hoped for and needed, but for future updates, it would be nice to keep people like me in mind - people that do actually want to use these phones a lot and not completely disconnect. I don’t know what this would entail, maybe somehow optimizing battery use (seems to die quite fast).

Overall I am entirely happy with this phone, I have APK installed Herewegomaps, Telegram and CalmQR. The phone works perfectly, the picture, sound quality and responsiveness speeds are great, I don’t really understand most issues people write about on this forum. For me it works perfectly! That being said there is one bug - I keep getting the sms sound even when no sms has been sent to me. Would be nice if this was investigated. In addition, as everyone else on this forum, I am really begging for a proper timer app - it is very needed!

I am keeping this phone, am excited for any new updates and the Mudita brand has stolen my heart a bit - seeing the surprise (no spoilers) they sent with the phone really warmed my heart and made me feel like back in the old days when companies really cared about their users and not everything was driven only by the acquisition of capital. In addition I have also converted my friends into buying this phone.

Welcome @pufijs
Here’s to Mudita Kompakt! The phone that could be the cure and the cause of all your friends problems.

I had that problem with the SMS sound, it’s usually random notifications from side loaded apps. By downloading katapult (or inkos) you have more control over the notification settings and I was able to fix that issue.

I relate to everything you said. I feel like ads are screaming at me everywhere, don’t want it on my phone!

The dreaming thing hit me for sure. I never even thought about it until you just mentioned it, but I actually had the exact same experience. I went years without having any dreams at all during my sleep and thinking about it now, I’ve been having dreams again over nearly the past year, which kinda lines up with when I switched to using the Kompakt daily. That’s actually kind of a big deal and someone smarter than me should investigate that.

Yeah, as @mgayden said, that’s just a general notification sound, likely coming from one of your sideloaded apps, and by default the Mudita Launcher doesn’t really have a way to show the actual Android notification. Switching to Katapult or InkOS will let you see what that is, or if you want to use ADB/WebADB to tinker a bit and dig through your Android settings, you might find a way to see those notifications there.

Agreed 100%!!!

The Meditation app works as a timer, of course your needs may differ

EDIT: See below, meditation stats are affected, I did not take that into consideration.

Others have already mentioned that sideloaded apps can cause notification sounds (sometimes devices connected via bluetooth, like headphones or keyboards, can also do this), but I’d also like to add two other possible explanations

  1. You could be receiving texts you can’t see, this is a result of the RCS incompatibility caused by the degoogled nature of the Kompakt. Make sure you’ve removed your number from RCS (and imessage if you ever had an iphone with this number)

  2. The DuraSpeed restrictions regularly ping, just to let you know they exist I guess? I can’t figure out how to turn this one off. I recommend sideloading the KompaktX app, as it’ll let you see what all your notifications are, so you will at least be able to disregard the DuraSpeed notifs when they happen. I thought turning DuraSpeed off entirely would make them stop, but nope! It’s mildly annoying but easy enough to ignore once you know what it is.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review.

What makes your perspective especially valuable is that it highlights something we often talk about internally: mindful technology isn’t necessarily ALWAYS about using technology less. Sometimes, it’s just about using technology differently.

We love that you’ve found a balance that works for you, staying connected, reading, listening to music, chatting with friends, and using the apps you need, without feeling pulled into the endless cycle of attention-grabbing content that dominates so much of today’s digital world.

It’s also wonderful to hear that you’re sleeping better, feeling less overstimulated, and enjoying your experience with Mudita Kompakt. Feedback like yours reminds us that there isn’t a single “right” way to use a minimalist phone. Everyone’s journey is different.

Also, since you mentioned the timer app, I wanted to let you know that I’ve created a Timer App that you’re welcome to download from GitHub if you’d like to try it out.

Thank you for your kind words, for sharing your experience, and for introducing your friends to Mudita. We’re excited to keep improving the experience through future updates, and we’ve noted your feedback regarding the timer app and SMS notification issue.

Welcome to the Mudita family :blue_heart:
