Honestly, I love it, I just can’t carry around a phone and have anxiety over a missed call or text all day long. Today alone I have pocket dialed three people, one of which I left a 4 minute voicemail with. A text containing the phone number for someone I was driving to meet up with didn’t come through. Then twice I got trapped in a call unable to get the active call screen open to end the call. That 4 minutes voicemail i mentioned earlier? about 45 seconds of that was me cussing, trying to get my cell phone to do the second part of it’s primary function and end the call. I tried every lock screen option available to fix this, I tried a different phone/dialer app, I tried mindfully pressing it to lock the phone then dramatically avoiding the power button when sliding it in to my pocket even though I’m convinced at this point my thigh is unlocking it through my pocket. I considered briefly carrying around a roll of tape to tape up the sensor when the phone wasn’t in my hand. I had the grand idea of 3D printing a case with a sliding power button cover even. I ended up having to install a third party app with only one function, adding a single buffer screen that required my intentional interaction to bypass.
Great, everything is working as it should for few days until I start getting calls that don’t provide a call or reject screen and won’t open through the little phone notification in the top left. What am I supposed to do if I have an extremely important call come in? What about if I’m making an extremely important call, they don’t answer, and for whatever reason I’ve left the active call screen? I mute the call and leave a long silent voicemail or restart the phone I guess. I shouldn’t have to turn on the “Power button ends call” option just in the off chance my phone decides to trap me in a call.
The issues revolving around calls and texts are big ones but they’re far from the only ones. m not in the tech industry, and I’m not going to act like I can troubleshoot this device. It may even be something I’m doing that’s causing all of this trouble. I just want to get off instagram and stop getting so many targeted ads but it seems like I’ve just shifted my fascination on to tinkering with a device hoping for stability that I don’t think I’m going to find.
I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be rude and I’m not normally a picky person. I just find myself reading on it occasionally and loving the screen and how it makes my eyes feel. I’ll notice the the weight of the device. I hear you and I see the vision, it’s just all sorts of messed up right now and I don’t wanna see the day when love for this new thing turns in to constant frustration. I may try factory resetting and just running it stock for a bit but I know I wouldn’t make it long without a few quality of life things added and eventually I’d still end up missing a call from my partner and getting left somewhere because my phone isn’t notifying me of incoming calls and texts. Anxiety, anxiety, anxiety.
I’m no expert, I’m not sure what the issue is but it seems to me that there’s a big problem if users are creating their own apps just to fix stock options? I’m wondering what percentage of Kompakt users are using Mudita’s OS as it is without a launcher and a plethora of apps to have something more functional?
Does anyone have any suggestions for a phone similar to the kompakt?
hi, i am on week 2 and was just logging onto this forum to say how much i love it. Please do factory reset or ask Mudita to swap it for you - it really sounds totally faulty! You deserve better. Good luck
many of us were looking for something similar to the Kompakt, but the really isnt anything, there are eink devices but are all larger, and are either full android with ability to access social media, like the minimal phone or contain spyware like the bigme devices, so they would need some under the hood tweaking to get them to where the Mudita currently is. the only other option is the Lightphone 2, but that is fully locked down to bare bones, and much smaller than the MK.
I had some issues with notifications, they seem to have calmed down, although I cant be sure as if I missed a call or text when I wasnt present to hear the audible ping, I wont be aware I had a call or text. I have on occasion not been able to end a call, but I use the kill button on the side, flicking if on and off again shuts down everything positively.
pocket dials seem to be something some people experience, I cant say its ever happend to me, other than when I have accidentally pressed the contact with the phone in my hand, when putting it down with the screen still live, so user error.
what apps do you have installed, do you have it in a case or just the bare phone? I would try a factory reset and install apps one at a time and test before adding the next. we are due an update to the OS any time so you may find this helps, but I would definitely do a resest first and see where you go with a fresh blank canvas.
its seems my issues with missed calls have not “calmed down” after all, I think I must have tempted fate. Yesterday I had a call whilst in the shower. I didnt get a notification on the Kompakt, or anything to indicate a missed call. today I had a missed call notification and no audible ring.
I swapped sim cards after my initial issues as I thought It may be related, but it obviously isnt. so Im back to not really knowing if I can rely on the phone or not. I think Im going to go back to my Graphene OS Pixel until the new os / firmware update, I dont need a lot from a phone but reliable calls & texts is something that I need to be confident is working properly.
That sucks, sorry brother. I’ve missed several calls and texts today… I don’t know the frequency at which they go missing but it’s bad enough that I’ve got some friends and family who are sending me messages on two platforms because they’re not sure if I’m receiving their texts. Ridiculous.
I haven’t had any missed call / text issues on any of my dumb / minimal devices, so it certainly seems to be bad luck.
If you live in a way that you can’t miss a call or text, then these minimal phones may not be right for you. If it’s work related, maybe your company will provide you with a mobile device?
It’s not that it’s life or death if I miss a call, but it’s inconvenient if I dont know I had one or who called me. I quite often turn off the phone using the offline button. But when I turn it back on, I’d like to know If I had a call or text, and decide if or how I would like to respond.
Sorry to hear that, It’s a real problem if a phone doesnt perform its basic function. I have been prepared to come up with work arounds for the other quirks of the Kompakt, but this is something I cant live with.
Saying if missing a call is so important to you, maybe you shouldn’t have a minimalist phone, is rather a crass comment, minimal should not mean unreliable.
It’s different for everyone, but personally I think not being constantly reachable is a good thing.
At first, it was strange because I was used to receiving notifications, messages, and calls that I somehow felt compelled to respond to or simply look at the phone screen. But then I realized that one of the things that has improved my life since having my Kompakt is precisely the fact that I no longer have to worry about always being reachable and contactable. It’s as if I’ve regained control of my time.
I realize it may seem silly and that I potentially could have done it before with a smartphone, but the nature of the Kompakt, how it’s designed, how it’s built, has made this possible for me, something I didn’t even know I needed but I’m really very happy about it.
Everyone seems to be missing the point here. Having the ability to not be reachable when you want to put yourself in that position, is good. its liberating, and exactly what the offline switch is for, and its under the control of the user.
Having a phone that randomly does not receive calls and texts when it should, and does not offer a way to know this has happened, is neither of these things.
Im all for minimalism wrt the mobile phone, but failure to perform the basic task of being a phone, is exactly that … a failure.
Anyone who does not think this is cause for concern, has somehow got lost in the hype of the digital minimalism youtube videos online.
It’s really frustrating more than anything because again, I love the phone. I can deal with the other annoyances I’ve noticed, as infuriating as they are. When it comes to the core functions though, they have to work. I wouldn’t buy a house without a roof? I want to be more present for the people I love and it feels bad walking in the door to, “did you pick up that thing I texted you about?” followed up by “Well, I tried calling you when you didn’t respond but it went straight to voicemail…”
Even just now I was thinking about a text I sent someone earlier that didn’t get a response and worrying that they had responded and I never received it. If I’m actively texting back and forth with someone, It’s because I want to communicate with them. I don’t want anyone feeling like they’re being ignored because my phone isn’t functioning properly and I miss a call / text or several.
I installed Molly (foss version of signal) to mitigate random text issues, and asked people to use signal instead of whatsapp and SMS, but last week I missed a dentist appointment, because they sent me a reminder by text which I didnt receive. and then I had the recent call problems.
I have had the Kompakt 9 months and had these problems (as well as other niggles) since day one. Ive done several factory resets and installed other apps to try and address the core issues, but for now its time for me to use something that is reliable and fuctions as it it should without having to constantly tinker with it.
Im really hoping the upcoming update of the os will resolve this, and that Mudita did not instead spend time, responding to the never ending requests, from people wanting functionality adding that the smartphone they are trying to give up had.
if this doesnt happen, my next step will be to try and flash lineage to the Kompakt, last time I looked this looked somewhat complicated, which is why I havent gone that way already. I really dont want to give up on it, but I feel like for now I need to step away, put it in a drawer for a while and forget about trying to fix it.
Have you tried checking your APN settings? This resolved some of the texting issues I was having. I will say, prior to getting my kompakt, my network on my iPhone in a major metro was deteriorating even with full bars and I would have calls going straight to voicemail without any indication. One night I randomly got 22 text messages all at once from various android users over the prior 6 weeks that I never received. Sometimes people would have to call me 3-4 times before it went through. This isn’t a defense of mudita because clearly there are issues, but make sure you are exploring your carrier settings and network as well. I have actually have had less missed calls with my kompakt on US mobile (on their t mobile network) than I did with my iPhone on verizon and ATT.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into it. I don’t have any problems with moving my sim back into my pixel or my iPhone, they both just work as they should. I have never had missed calls, texts or strange notification issues with either.
I will leave it a few days and investigate the settings as you suggested, at the moment it just irritates me thanks again for the advice.
