Native apps worth using vs not

My MK is my primary phone, and I have my old phone (iPhone SE) I will keep around for a few things the MK doesn’t do well. I haven’t been using my iPhone much at all since I made the switch last week, just a few things I’ve needed to check on, which has been awesome! Here are my thoughts…

MK apps on home screen:

  • Alarm (really hope the bugs get fixed in July update)
  • Calendar (needs improvement)
  • Camera (love it for what it is! I have a nice point-and-shoot as my main camera)
  • Meditation (used rarely but nice)
  • Music (just using for audiobooks right now, but not super ideal… Would like to be able to save my place somehow - scrolling to the correct timestamp is difficult with a lengthy audio file)
  • Notes (became reasonably functional only after sideloading FUTO keyboard)
  • Weather (does the basics well)

Sideloaded apps on home screen:

  • PictureThis (plant identification app)
  • Plum Village (meditation app)

MK apps hidden from home screen:

  • Calculator (works perfectly well!)
  • Chess (fun but don’t need it on home screen)
  • E-reader (not using)
  • Maps (used rarely because of limited function, looking forward to July updates… My main navigation is my car’s built-in GPS now. Would love to see public transit information included eventually, but maybe that’s a lot to ask from a phone from a different continent?)
  • Recorder (pretty bad quality in my opinion… Will be using my iPhone for this tool when needed)

Sideloaded apps hidden from home screen:

  • Aurora Store
  • FUTO Keyboard
  • Spotify (I open through app manager for two reasons: to use moderately, and because the icon’s aesthetics - displays as a solid black square)
  • Yelp (used as suggested on this forum for looking up address, business hours, and phone numbers)

By the way, I love being able to hide apps from the home screen! Being able to keep apps I want to access but not have to look at them all the time, especially if I use them rarely, is really nice.

Overall, really enjoying having my MK and still learning/adjusting to making it work for my daily needs. Would love to hear others’ opinions on these. Looking forward to that July update.

@wks91 Thanks for sharing this! Love how intentional your setup is, using Mudita Kompakt as your main phone while keeping the iPhone in the background for just a few things is ( just my personal opinion) a great balance. Totally agree that hiding apps from the home screen is such a nice touch for reducing clutter. Also, great sideloading choices (PictureThis and Plum Village are smart additions!). I will ask the team about the improvements to the Alarm, Calendar, and Music app for audiobooks.
Excited to hear how your setup evolves!

I also love the ability to hide anything that you don’t constantly need, my daily use of the Kompakt has just been great, especially since I sideloaded QUICK as my sms app, being able to silence text notification has increased my focus so much because now i can leave my kompakt out of view , in my bag for example, and still be reachable via the phone. I actively work on having large moments of my day where I don’t even see my kompakt, I don’t want even a minimalist phone within my reach at all times because texting becomes an addiction for me. So its nice that those areas are now dealt with so I can focus and be fully in the moment wherever I am
