My Mudita Kompakt setup & thoughts on future Improvements

Hi everyone,

I’ve been refining my setup on the Mudita Kompakt to find that perfect balance between minimalism and essential functionality. While I love the philosophy, I’ve had to install several third-party tools to make it work for my daily life.

My Current “Calm” Stack:

  • Communication: WhatsApp (sadly almost essential in my country).
  • Sync & Calendar: DAVx5 for syncing contacts and KompaktCalendar to finally have access to my shared family calendar.
  • The “Calm” Suite: CalmQR, CalmDirectory, and CalmCast.
  • Web & Links: I use the stock SMS app by default, but I keep a third-party SMS app combined with EinkBro specifically for those not-so-rare moments when I need to open and read a web link.
  • Updates: Obtainium to keep everything up to date without a bloated app store.

Honestly, I feel like most of these features (except WhatsApp, of course) should eventually be part of the core OS. Having to rely on external apps for shared calendar sync or opening a simple link feels like a missed opportunity for a seamless “out of the box” experience.

Furthermore, I’d love to see the native Maps app get some upgrades:

  • Advanced Routing: Options to avoid highways, tolls, or ferries.
  • GPX Support: The ability to import and follow GPX tracks for hiking or cycling.
  • Map Maintenance: Regular (monthly) map updates.

I’m aware that many of my suggestions could be argued as “core features.” However, I also recognize that the Kompakt is an “opinionated” device. Listening too much to every community request can be a trap that leads to feature creep and bloat. I truly love the philosophy and the phone as it is, and I trust Mudita to keep the experience coherent. Despite the wait for 1.5.0, I’d rather have a curated, stable vision than a device that tries to please everyone and loses its focus.
