Mudita Kompakt returns,..1 week review

Have to say I have really enjoyed my time back with the kompakt. I tested out some sideloaded apps, took them off, trying to focus on the keeping the batterly life as high as I could but ultimately realized there are just very useful apps that service me as tools that are not addictive at all. I have heremaps sideloaded because it serves as a directory, like the light phone has where you can look up locations and phone numbers, I refuse to put anytime of browser on the kompakt because I know when I am bored I will be using it, and yes it is e-ink so how good could the browser be but regardless to me it is an avenue for distraction. If I am standing in line I know it is the first thing I would open or if I am watching tv I would be looking random crap up. I have to say the typing experience has seem to really have improved, I actually enjoy the stock keyboard better than gboard or futo. I also have decided to keep using the stock sms app because thanks to a user on here I sideloaded and app that lets me silence text notifications from the texting which allows me to focus and only be available for calls, like right now, about to head out and play soccer with the kids and I want to be fully present with them. I also sideload loop habit tracker, love this app has helped me break so many addictive habits. And thats it, that is all I have sideloaded.

I have loved my return with the Kompakt and so happy I got it in black. Having adhd I am distracted easily and the kompakt is such an amazing device and when I had it in pebble grey I would just be holding it for no reasons sometimes because I just loved it so much lol. Being able to try both phones for extended periods of time was helpful in making this final decision. I think in this day and age after using pure dumb phones for 4 years really helped break my addiction, but ultimately to be able to function in this day and age the minimalist phone is just the best option, sideload what you need to make the phone the most effective TOOL for you. I have been able to do that, and I am sticking with the kompakt for a long time.

Cool. When I read your earlier post about selling your MK, I was thinking, MK is such a good match for your needs, why you decided to sell it. Now I feel happy for you that you are back using MK and liking it again.

Yeah I think I just needed to try the light phone 3, It just looked so cool lol, I am glad I was able to try both phones for a decent amount of time and then make a final decision. I have loved using the Kompakt, and the best part about the phone is I barely use it. I make it a point to try to keep it out of my pocket, keeping it in the mudita pouch and in my bag when I am at the library. When I had a smartphone I would be constantly pulliing it out of. my pocket and I find that habit is hard to break even when you move on to a dumb phone, so I actively make sure it is out of site, when I need to do focused work, or if I just want to enjoy my surroundings. Yesterday I went for a walk by the ocean and I had the phone in the pouch, so there was friction every time I wanted to pull it out. A lot more annoying to constantly take it out of the mudita pouch then simply taking it out of your pocket. In the mornings I keep it in offline mode for the first hour or 2 I am awake and again out of site

The LP3 is art. Looks very industrial. It currently has much better group text BUT…the Kompakt just makes me happy. I think the Mudita team also has its act together. Joe and CO. seem to be barely treading water. I want them to succeed. I think we need more options but man, I just love my Kompakt - Lake Blue and Sage Green covers. I look forward to the Roadmap update and having my Kompakt for years to come.

Yeah there was something about holding the LP3 I did not like, very cold, too techy for me, felt like I as holding a smartphone. The kompakt in the end just literally has everything I need, and anything it doesn’t you can just sideload. Everything I have sideloaded now are just things from other dumb phones the kompakt does not have, like waze for directions. Yes kompakt has maps but waze saves me time avoiding traffic. I had to take my son to soccer and thanks to waze I literally avoided a 20 min delay that would have made me late for his game. But I also like that if my data for whatever reason runs out for the month (just have a 1 gig) I can use the offline maps on the kompakt. My phone bill right now with the kompakt is 17 dollars canadian a month, can’t beat that, a gig of data is all I need.
The other thing I enjoy doing is hiding all the apps, I love that true master of minimalism logo that pops up. I find as well with someone that has adhd I love having no apps logos in view. The friction of having to go to settings and then manage apps to open the apps I need discourages me from just opening up apps when I am bored. I also love the Mudita pouch that came with the phone. When I truly want to focus now, I put the phone in the poucn and put it in the bottom of my bag when I am at the library and need to 100 percent focus on work and still be able to be reached via phone call. Love that I was able to block text notications from the sms app by sideloading an app that does that

For the, the ultimate no notification is Offline+ It’s been a few months, still no additional apps. Offline+ is among my, if not my favorite Kompakt feature.

Not that I want to use any google products, but how do you get Waze to work? As a google thing, interesting to hear it working on the Mudita.

Just sideloaded it and it works, didn’t have to do anything special, yeah I like offline plus but the only time I can use it is if I am at the movie with my kids, or at home with my kids, when I am out and about during the week, I can’t have that mode on because I have to be available if my kids need to reach me from school.
I tried to go no sideloading apps but when I think about my dumb phone journey I had phones like the sunbeam f1 and they had waze which for me as I mentioned is such a crucial app, I also added a podcast app, a timer app because I want a quick way to set a timer for when i jog. Any app I have on here is a tool, there is no app that is addictive or I can use when I am bored. I have come to the conclusion as much as I want to be dumb phone purest it is just not practical in this day and age. Thank god there is a phone like the kompakt that is the best of both worlds, smart and dumb combined to make the perfect minimalist phone with a e-ink screen. I honeslty just love this phone and I love the set up I have no, I have committed to this phone I will not be selling and going back other phones, I have done that so. much it is exhausting lol. I also like that this is the only online forum I am on, I find reddit to be a time waste that is where I was when I had the light phone 3, also discord. I am off of both and will never go back to either. My online time this past weekend was maybe 30 mins. When I want to get on the forums, I just hop on my macbook when I am done whicih I am about to me, I shut the laptop and stick it downstairs or else it becomes my smartphone replacement.

I’d love to know how Waze compares to Here We Go (available on Aurora), which also provides real-time traffic and useful directories with phone numbers, office hours, etc. I haven’t tested it on MK, but it is working well in the States.

I’m still catching up on the latest updates. Does the MK Maps app provide real-time navigation?

They do, but it seems working fair enough with walk or bicycle. I find it not flawless for a car ride.
Used it twice and my impressions were that you get two distance values in the top left corner and not sure which distance is the actual one, voice directions seeemed out of sync, I just had to keep my eye on the map and what was good, it was at least following along.
It still makes me prefer manual route lookups before taking a trip, but I’m okay with that personally, frankly that’s the right thing to do in most cases IMO.

Oh does it also provide traffic updates? I am wondering if i should use that I am concered that waze might be collecting my data, but I am wondering doesn’t herewego do the same, but what data can they possibly be collecting on me when I use the kompakt

Thanks for the info!

I’m unsure if HereWeGo collects data.

I understand the premise of offline navigation, but I need real-time navigation because of my longer work commutes and rely heavily on traffic updates.

Could anyone else share their experience using MK Maps for real-time navigation in larger metropolitan areas in the US?

Yeah small price to pay for data collection, at the end of the day avoiding accidents and long traffic delays is a huge importance to me, Not sure what they can collect on me anyways via a map app, I don’t have any social media whatsoever so I am not worried from that end, if weather and map apps I have sideloaded location data on me not a big deal, I can’t be advertised to via collection of my data that is my main concern

I would love to be dumb phone purist, but alas, not possible in this season of life with kids and such. How’s the Kompakt for reliability?

Very reliable, vs the Mudita Pure experience it is night and day. lol
