I’m on the search for a “dumbphone” for quite some time now. I think with the mudita kompakt I may have found a device that will work good for me. I’m very mindful about security & privacy. I know that the mudita center is open source so I could just look it through but I thought before doing so I might just ask here, maby someone already did
So what really is my question here?
Is the center app writing anything at all into a database on some cloud server or is it all stored locally on the device running the app? Im aware that for something like OTA Updates you have to have an internet connection established but for anything else I hope that is not the case. And also if there is any data at all going through a cloud server?
I’m still wondering more generally whether anything else goes through a server. I read in an older forum post that an option to disable the in-app analytics was planned. Does anyone know if that’s available now, and where to find it?
Apart from that:
Besides checking for and downloading updates, does the Center contact any other server (e.g. crash reports or log uploads)?
If you sync contacts or calendars (e.g. with Google), does that go directly between the app and Google, or through a Mudita server?
If anyone has checked the network traffic or looked into the code on GitHub, I’d really appreciate any insights!
Mudita Center does a few network calls. It communicates with:
api.center.mudita.com
release-assets.githubusercontent.com
images.ctfassets.net
github.com
analytics.mudita.com
You can set up a rule on Windows Defender to block network traffic to and from Mudita Center if you’re concerned about it. I imagine the app will continue to work for file transfers and local backups.
Thanks a lot, that’s really helpful! Since Mudita Center is open source, I’ll take a look at the code myself and check which of these calls I actually need functionally. Anything I don’t need or don’t want, I’ll just remove and build the app myself. If I find anything interesting along the way, I’ll share it here.
Mudita Center (once it’s downloaded onto your computer) doesn’t require an internet connection to work.
Based on the public source code, Mudita Center primarily stores your device data locally and doen’t to upload contacts, messages, files, backups, or other personal device content to a cloud database during normal operation.
The code for Mudita Center is Open Source, so you can see everything.
