You mean escaping the app by clicking on external links? Or using it as a time sink? Neither has happened… yet. I think the good thing about it is that it’s so single-purpose, but yes, you could get carried away if that’s a concern of yours. But from that point of view, the app is definitely better than a browser.
I don’t have mine yet, but this is my plan
(default apps)
phone, sms, calculator, meditation, notes, weather, camera
(from manual apk sideloading)
mynoise - soundscapes I use for focus and sometimes sleep
signal - for messaging military friends and family
wolfram alpha - math nerd
anylist - grocery list synced with my husband’s phone
supernote partner app - for a todo list that syncs with my supernote manta
(from F-droid)
AnkiDroid - flashcards
Goodtime - my favorite pomodoro timer app
Habits - habit tracker
Aegis Authenticator - two factor authentication
EscapePod - for podcasts
Music Player GO
AnySoftKeyboard
(maybe)
HERE WeGo
WikiReader (lighter weight than the official wikipedia app and allows disabling images)
FREE Browser - to be kept hidden and used in case of emergencies out and about. If I can’t keep myself off it at home, then it gets the boot.
Mudita-Apps I use:
- Calendar
- Camera
- Meditation
- Notes
- Calculator
- Recorder
- (SMS & phone, weather via options menu & alarm via clock on home screen)
Sideloaded apps:
- Audible
- Lithium
- Molly
- Organic maps
- Spotify
- Waking Up
- (F-Droid and Aurora for sideloading & updating, but hidden)
I really like that everything fits on one page
Mudita Apps I use / have not hidden:
- Phone/SMS (obviously)
- Calculator
- Camera
- Chess
- E-Reader
- Meditation
- Notes
- Recorder
- Weather, Alarm + Calendar through control centre or pressing the time/date on home screen
Sideloaded Apps on the home screen as I use them regularly/daily:
- Spotify
Sideloaded Apps that I don’t use daily/regularly or are just there to run in the background so they are hidden from view:
- Activity Manager
- Aurora Store
- BinaryEye
- Brave
- Garmin Connect
- Costa Coffee
- FUTO Keyboard
- HereWeGo Maps
- Notification Log
- Thunderbird Email
- Wikipedia
I started off with way less sideloaded apps and have slowly been adding more as and when I have found myself grabbing my smartphone to do certain tasks. I did have the intention to be ultra minimalist but I think the most important thing for me is removing distraction and scrolling, so if scanning my Coffee App on the Mudita removes a point of my day where I have a smartphone in my hand and a reason to carry it around with me then great.
By adding those extra sideloaded apps, I’m slowly getting to the point where the Mudita can do everything I feel I need/want it to in my daily life and I can just leave my smartphone in a draw at home.
Yeah this is a smart way to look at it, look the reality is we live in a world where for the vast majority you need a smartphone for certain things, and if you have to sideload them on and they are tools that help you stay away from an actual smartphone then I am all for it. I want to be ultra minimal too I have a certain pride in it lol, but I also hate having to print out movie tix which wastes paper or take my cat s22 flip to the gym so I can sign into the gym to work out. I can do all of this on the kompakt down via sideloading , I can sideload my gym app, and for the movies I can just download the qr code onto my kompakt.
I still print my tickets, just to make a point. I use as much as possible alternatives which don’t rely on smartphones, so I support a smartphone-free existence.
I can’t do more than 3-4 sideloaded apps (WhatsApp, Bandcamp, Herewego, DuckDuckGo) without a major drain on battery life. How are you guys doing it? Is the trick making sure to force stop in background?
What batterie life do you get with the sideloaded apps?
Approx 1.5 days or just under, which is still pretty good
Sharing my minimalist setup using Olauncher, which has been a real improvement vs the native launcher.
I also like that you can rename the apps:
- Music (Apple Music)
- Podcasts (Pocket Casts)
- Maps (Here WeGo Maps)
- Notes (Mudita)
- SMS (Mudita)
- Phone (Mudita)
Additional apps not shown on Home Screen:
- Brave browser (didn’t want a browser but it’s rarely used and was necessary to log into another app)
- Economist espresso
- FUTO keyboard
This setup has been a great improvement for me over the default setup. Highly recommend checking out Olauncher for the additional customization options. (Several people have asked to hide the clock, which is an option on Olauncher)
I think I’ve found my final setup. I spent a long time thinking about what I really need in my day-to-day life and have come to the conclusion that it’s not that much. Anything to do with banking and payments is left out. It’s just a shame that the post office/DHL can’t offer me a physical card for picking up shipments. So, unfortunately, I need the corresponding app. I’m even more sorry that Mudita hasn’t managed to implement at least basic features like an alarm clock and calendar in a usable state. Perhaps something will change over time and I can do without these two sideloaded apps. I really hope so, because I’d like to have as much Mudita spirit as possible in my Kompakt.
Did you have an LP2 before? just because the setup you made is really similar to that
I didn’t but I’m sure there’s some inspiration coming from the LP videos I’ve seen . I used Olauncher on a Jelly Star and got used to this setup before receiving my Kompakt
If only you could add that WhatsApp line on a LP3…
Thank you for sharing this!! Literally one of 2 apps I’ve considered sideloading (the other being Signal). I used to have Olauncher on an Android phone and thought it might look great on the Kompakt… and I can now see it really does!
I just wants to share my setup for now.
I chosed the niagara launcher as I used it already on my old phone.
I habe quite some apps installed for now but will reduce it perhabs:
Must haves:
- Niagara Launcher
- Signal
- Yazio
- Open Camera
- K-9 Mail
- Fahrinfo(public transport Berlin)
- Browser (at the moment duckduckgo but not quite sure which to choose)
Nice to have:
- Beeper
- Home assistant
- Antenna Pod
- Ugreen Nas(picture backup)
- Little File Explorer
The only 3 apps I allow to run in the background permanently are FUTO Keyboard, WhatsApp and Garmin. Everything else gets forced stopped. Most of my sideloaded apps are hidden and I have to go into “manage apps” and click “open” manually, to exit the app I press the back button which takes me back to the “open” page, but now has “force stop” as well. I click force stop and then go to homepage/lock the phone.
I’ve not let the phone run down to anything less than 60% but I would estimate I would get 3-4 days battery life with my set up and usage.
I run Whatsapp, Librera (better e-reader app) and Brave which I force stop. I also replaced the keyboard with Gboard and that is it. Perhaps I will change it to Futo.
I’ve found FUTO brilliant and no complaints whatsoever!
The problem I have is that it doesn not support text to speech in my native language.
