Maybe being able to side load apps is not a bad thing

I thought about this a lot and being able to sideload apps still has enough friction to it to prevent someone from digital addiction to just download whatever they want on the fly from the the google playstore. At first this was going to be a deal breaker for me because i thought it kind of breaks the minimalist philosophy but I don’t think that anymore. If I want to add apps it will have to be at my computer at home connecting the Mudita Kompakt so there will be no temptation day to day when I am out and about. Will honestly still be a tough decision between LP3 and Kompakt but man that Kompakt launch video just gets you pumped lol, I wish this phone was in my hands now lol

Also for me there is not much I can add, I don’t have facebook, instagram, twitter or anything that would be remotely distracting for me to add. But being able to sideload a movie ticket app would be nice, or anything app that is a tool

I have five apps that I added to my Google Pixel 6 after I de-Googled it with CalyxOS and that I would love to see on the Kompakt, which I ordered today.

As an example, one of those apps is the Audible app.

Because my carrier’s SIM card resides today in my Sunbeam Wireless F1 Orchid, I connect at home my SIM-less de-Googled Pixel 6 to the Internet via an Ethernet-to-USB-C dongle when I want to download new Audible books and new podcasts.

Once I have the Kompakt, I can tether the Pixel 6 to it for Internet access when I am away from home.

If eventually others prove that they can, for example, side-load the Audible app to the Kompakt without “breaking” it, then I will consider side-loading the handful of aforementioned apps.

Otherwise, I will reserve how I use my Pixel 6 with the Kompakt with how I use the Pixel 6 today with my F1 Orchid – as a way to use a few non-Google-services-requiring Android apps (podcasts, Audible, Session, etc.).

Put simply: Starting next May (2025), my combined use of my F1 Orchid + my de-Googled Pixel 6 will become my Kompakt + de-Googled Pixel 6 combination.

Will you miss your Orchid ? You used it for a long time!

I will miss the speech-to-text feature that the US$40/year Premium Service enables. It is superb … and anonymous (thanks to how Sunbeam Wireless has designed it).

Yeah I remember when I owned this phone (multiple times by the way lol) the speech to text was UNREAL, honestly its amazing how accurate it was, the light phone speech to text is not great in comparison.

Also I am finding my current light phone so small now after these Kompakt videos lol, how am I going to use this till next May when the Kompakt comes out lol, Although my LP3 ships in Jan so I will be using that, will get to use that for a few months before deciding on whether I make the switch to the Kompakt

I was actually considering just selling the light phone now and getting the Sunbeam till my light phone 3 gets here lol, but can’t justify the cost of the Sunbeam cause its a harder device to sell once you are done with it , light phones you can easily sell on reddit

I also miss waze, if their phones were candy bar instead of flip I would honestly be using it over the light phone, cause having waze for directions is so clutch, always gets me out of traffic, hopefully I can sideload that on the Kompakt lol

With the North America version of the Kompakt scheduled today to ship in May, 2025, I now have seven more months to say goodbye to my trusty F1 Orchid and the Premium service.

Besides the Premium service’s voice-to-text feature across the various apps, I will miss the radar map & extended forecast in the Weather app, as well as the points-of-interest search in the Navigation app.

Perhaps the Kompakt’s Map app will include points of interest, and perhaps the Kompakt’s Weather app will include a radar map.

Staying tuned!

Something I have not yet already discussed in the other thread:
I understand why they don’t offer WhatsApp. It doesn’t fit Mudita’s philosophy of privacy and mindfulness (omg the WhatsApp groups!!). But for many people, messengers like WhatsApp are the main means of communication in their country. At least now they have a choice. WhatsApp runs fine without Play Store and on e-ink. I tried before.
