I downloaded the maps for my region and then after that I downloaded all of the maps for my country. The kompakt needed quite a lot of time and I got the above error message many times but the disk space was not full. Then the maps stayed in the “preparing map” status until I restarted the device. → than everything was fine.
Also before the restart, my sms incoming sounds were not playing anymore. Did not get one yet but it seems the devices likes the German AEG-Method (Ausschalten, Einschalten, Gut) which translates to (off switching, on switching, good)
maps especially data for a whole country can take up a lot of space.
You’ve used up all your space, so you might want to initially delete your current map downloads
then you might want to change the storage location for your map data to your SD card (if you have one installed) and just use the SD card to store map data
open Maps → menu (3 line icon top left) → settings → Storage → SD Card

as I said above on my post, my phone has still only used half of its internal space. So I could only imagine, that the download was too big but after installing the map data the device “deletes” the install files just leaving the map data on it. Otherwise I am on your side. I just wanted the map of my country on the device and not on an external sd-card. That will host future maps of foreign countries and music.
