I think it would be a nice, rather essential feature for any handheld map app to be able to gain a position fix without necessarily waiting for GPS fix. This is important if you are planning your route already from home or your office or any enclosed space where sky view is obstructed. This becomes even more of a BIG deal for us who live in colder climates.
@aminoh I understand that it can be frustrating. In mainstream smartphones GPS localization is fast & this workaround exists because those phones use A-GPS, Wi-Fi scanning, Bluetooth beacons, and even cell-tower triangulation to estimate location before GPS achieves a proper satellite fix. That gives the “quick location” that many people have become accustomed to.
Because of privacy reasons, Mudita Kompakt does not use:
- A-GPS assistance from the internet,
- Wi-Fi scanning,
- Bluetooth scanning,
- Background network queries for location,
- Cell-tower triangulation
Instead, Mudita Kompakt uses pure GPS, which is:
- receive-only,
- private (no data leaves the device),
- but slower to fix in obstructed sky conditions (indoors, office buildings, forest, cold conditions where people want to start navigating quickly without standing in the cold).
This means that your location never leaves the device, but the trade-off is that the phone can only determine your position once it has a real satellite fix. Indoors or in obstructed sky conditions, that lock naturally takes longer.
So, you’re absolutely right that instant indoor positioning would feel more convenient. We simply chose to prioritize privacy instead of relying on the assisted methods used in mainstream smartphones.
