A win for Mudita!
Great video, and very balanced. I always like his videos.
I’m with him with regards to the text based launcher, would love to see that become available as an option at some point.
I am thinking about side loading Niagara Launcher. However, it might not look good, because of the low refresh rate.
I am starting to lean now towards the Kompakt. The LP3 is a piece of beautiful looking industrial design, but I just think the Kompakt will be the better ergonomically, with the shape and screen. The only pluses of the LP3 software are podcasts and calendar sync, which sideloading easily solves
It would surprise me if the vertical letter bar works properly. This will be my first e-ink display, but from what I understand, the more static it is, the better! A simple optimised Before launcher-like would be nice.
If anyone is successfully able to load the Niagara launcher can they please share their experience/results ?
Great video …so happy I cancelled my LP3 order and went with the Kompakt, it just looks and feels like a minimalist phone, the LP3 should have stuck with e-ink and upgraded it to be the same speed as the Kompakt screen
I am actually heading to Mexico in August, hoping the Kompakt will work there!
Agreed! The e-ink screen on the Light Phone II left so much to be desired (it was way too soft and prone to lagging). I was impressed when I got my Mudita Pure because the screen was so sharp and responsive in comparison! I thought the responsiveness was a consequence of the Pure’s screen being smaller, but it looks like Mudita was able to replicate that responsiveness on the Kompakt—I’m excited to put it to the test in real life!
I agree with the reviewer.
I think the Kompakt shines with the e-ink screen with faster response than the LPII, the headphone jack and the offline mode. I also really like how he talked about the curved edges. So, those things sell me on the Kompakt.
However, unlike him, a camera is necessary for me. I dont have a fancy SLR and right now no point-and-shoot. I like that the camera on the LPIII is quality enough to capture memories, scenery. That’s what I use my camera for for the most part. And like he said, I do prefer Light’s layout. I know that technically, the android layer can be accessed, but, I like that it only has the essentials on the Light OS.
Honestly, towards the beginning of the video, I was really regretting not getting a Kompakt during the Kickstarter time since I have mostly transferred to all e-ink devices (minus my ipad I use as a computer), but I really can’t stand the camera on the Kompakt. Even if the photos appear in color once uploaded, I need something like Light’s. It’s the main reason I stayed in the Apple ecosystem for so long. I also really hate icons. It just reminded me of a “healthy” e-ink smartphone. So that’s is why I didn’t pre-order the Kompakt. I think Jose made the layout on the Kompakt look like Light’s, but overall I’m still not sure if that phone is for me. I guess we will see if I have regrets.
Anyway, like the reviewer said, I wish there was a phone that combined the best parts of each phone. I’m actually picturing something kind of like those foldable phones. Where the outside screen is e-ink and has the Light phone 3 layout and functions as the primary screen (which is not very common. On phones that actually exist, I believe the inner screen is the main screen). But then when you want to take a photo, there’s an OLED screen inside which is used with Light’s lens. The imaginary phone would of course have rounded edges, the easy-access offline slider and a headphone jack. Anyway, a girl can dream.
If Light ever did upgrade the Light Phone 2, that may be the phone for me. Unfortunately, that won’t be for another few years.
@minimalist4life Definitely test it out & let us know how it works. I’m going to Turkey next month (Istanbul, some areas around Cappadocia as well as Gaziantep [which is like 50km from the Syrian border] so I will definitely be checking the network coverage with traditional SIM card an an eSIM.
