So the light phone 3 initially was to ship in Jan to the earliest backers, then it got pushed to Feb and now its got pushed to march, I really hope the same does not happen to the kompakt because for us north americans that would mean waiting till basically the end of the summer that just seems so far away!
@minimalist4life Their website says April 2025
I’ve got nothing against light phone, I think they are doing great work, too. But does this give the Kompakt more momentum in the market, so long as they keep the current promised timeline?
Not sure they will meet their deadline to be honest, track record is not good look how delayed the Pure was, I don’t think it will be as delayed as the Pure but I am now doubting if they will hit their exact deadlines
@minimalist4life We might just surprise you
I hope so! And by surprise I mean the phone releases next month
I’m very much looking forward to Kompakt coming into the world in it’s own perfect timing… that is to say, when it’s ready
Its much easier to mod Android then to build new phone, software wise.
So even in end user functionalities it does not look so, Pure was harder to do.
I mean, the delay is not necessarily Light’s fault. It can be difficult to say for sure when certification/verification will be complete. The best they could’ve done and did was guess how long that would be, but having it put back 1-2 months due to it taking longer, well…better that it has the proper certifications than be released prematurely. As excited as I am for the phone to come, I believe the added time just makes it even more special and adds to the momentum for it to come out. Sure, would have been nice for it to come out by now, but I honestly don’t feel upset about it coming out in March. It’s the earliest they can possibly do it with certification being complete and it gives them more time to fine tune everything. In turn, hopefully besides minor OS things, people will be contacting support less. It’s all good in my book.
Phones take time-- not only to make and get proper certification but polish it up, Kompakt included. Whatever time it takes for companies to put out their best work and best possible workable phone (while they continue to develop for it in the future) is worth it in the long run.
The funny part about these phones that bridge the gap between smartphone and dumbphone is it’s supposed to help users with becoming more patient (both intentionally, but also maybe unintentionally). Without everything at our fingertips 24/7, the simplicity and mindfulness associated with these phones will bring many benefits, including teaching us to just be more patient. I’m bringing this up because let the wait for these phones to come out be a time for us to be more patient. That’s something that we will hopefully get better at with these phones anyway, so, while you wait, might as well start slowly transforming yourselves before the phone even comes out. – probably not worded as eloquently, but hopefully my point is understood.
@muxbree Thank you for bringing this up & t hank you for sharing your thoughts and for approaching this topic with such an open, balanced mindset. You’re absolutely right that it takes time to have a good product and to make sure that it’s market-ready. AND certification and refinement are crucial steps in the process, and while waiting can be challenging, it’s also an opportunity to cultivate the very patience and presence that these phones encourage. I’m not sure if you’re following the recent release of the Minimal Phone, but from all the reviews & comments out there, it does seem that it was a rush-job. And while we are so used to getting things faster & faster, sometimes, that’s not always a good thing.
Ah yes! I remember when the minimal phone was being advertised and now I’m seeing that it’s out. I haven’t paid too much attention to the reviews yet mostly because in my biased opinion, it wasn’t really a phone I was ever interested in. Before it came out, I knew Kompakt and the LP3 were stronger in design and intentionality. However, I have been curious to know and will likely take a look either before or after the light phone 3 interview with Jose Briones.
The fact you’re saying that it looks rushed isn’t very promising for that phone. I’m so glad I didn’t purchase it! No hate in those who have, but you’re absolutely right. If in fact, it looks like a product that isn’t completely finished, it’s a wonderful example of what we’re talking about and the reason why I’m glad Mudita & Light are taking their time. Trust me people, it’s worth it. Thanks for bringing the minimal phone to my attention, I’ve been meaning to take a look at some online reviews now that it’s out. I may reply again with my own thoughts afterwards!
Livestream is now live. https://youtube.com/live/vj2pKVDE_Jc?feature=share
In my opinion, it’s going to be between LP3 and Mudita depending on whether you’d like OLED or E-ink. The only true minimal options out there
Yes! I saw this live this morning & posted it for the Reddit community I appreciate you making such a seamless interview with Joe and looking forward for the LP3 releasing. I made a seperate post highlighting this on Reddit.
I recently started watching your livestream for the Minimal phone and I can definitely agree with @urszula ; It feels like the release of the phone was rushed with all the different bugs. I mean, I understand with a new launch, there will inevitably be some bugs here and there, but to the extent I saw in the video, it seemed like some of that could’ve been worked on prior to mass production. Now, they will most likely get a bunch of emails for support and forced to repeat the “we are aware of this issue, we will br working on it and letting you know when you can update after we’ve sorted out patches to fix the issues at hand” type of message.
I’m glad that Joe mentioned he will have a small part of his team dedicated to this sort of stuff once the LP3 is released. It seems Light is very mindful about how it operates and it makes me happy with my choice of backing it. Much like Mudita, I appreciate these small companies that really do focus on their product with great intentionality, but also no rush to put it out before the product works the best to its ability. Small tangent-- I do not like all the hype so many products have gotten for them to fail months to a year later. It’s very unfortunate that there’s promises they’ve made with their attractive ads, but they don’t last. Feels like such a money grab. However, when it comes to Light & Mudita, you are sure to not only get what you expect/pay for but also great customer support who not only want to satisfy their customers (the majority, so to an extent) but also listen to customer feedback to optimize them. Both companies are golden in my book and I am very grateful as a customer to buy both products and continuely support you guys.
Small comment about your Minimal phone livestream: One thought that came to mind in regards to something you said about the company saying it will come later…it seems like something they could’ve finished before releasing. I think there a big difference between Light who sets themselves up for the future, even if they cannot make everything they want by launch, whereas with The Minimal company, they should’ve actually finished certain parts of the phone before mass producing, ie. You couldn’t do anything with the buttons without pressing another button, and there was something else I can’t remember at the moment…but it’s clear there’s a lot of issues with that phone currently.
Could not agree more, there is just something about these Minimal guys I don’t like, they just seem liked tricksters in my opinion, slick videos, promising this phone back in September, multiple delays only to produce a SUB PAR product, people that backed that phone mark my words are in for a rough ride with that phone. Whereas yes Light and Mudita are very good companies, I had ordered LP3 day one and I love the company and I am using the light phone 2 right now, and although texting is a pain I realize this is the type of phone a person with smartphone addiction needs, it needs to be frustrating to use for a severe addict so there is so much friction that you stay away from the phone and stay focused on more important things. Ultimately the LP3 is just too pricey for a canadian, even at the launch price with shipping and duties you are talking north of 900 bux, that plus I just love e-ink, I ultimately chose the Kompakt but to be honest I am not even sure if I will give up the light phone 2, because my focus is just so good with this phone, its tiny, I always have it away from my person when reading, doing work etc, the Kompakt seems like a bigger phone but I know ultimately the pull of it will be too much and I will end up using it, but I am hoping since by then I have build up some very good habits and will not get distracted by the kompakt, I find texting has been addictive to me in the past so I am worried that the easy with which I can type may have be using the Kompakt more but I think I can have some self control. I know I want to sideload a minimalist launcher so the apps appear as text like they do on the light phone 2, biggest draw to the Kompakt besides the e-ink is also that battery I mean having a phone that last for days and days is very convenient, I will end up really actually missing the LP2, as much as I have said its frustrating I realized ultimately thats what I need to become a more focused person. I have 14 days with the Kompakt when it gets here so I will ultimately make my decision then between the LP2 and Kompakt, but I doubt I will choose the LP2 lol
@Jose_Briones I take it you’re not a fan of the Minimal Phone
When the project started, it had a very niche vision. Providing basic tools and nothing more with a QWERTY keyboard and E-ink. But then, it became a smartphone. That’s when it stopped being interesting to me.
Are you going to be meeting the Mudita team again before the launch of the Kompakt for an update?
Most likely. But probably closer to release in May
https://www.reddit.com/r/LightPhone/s/9VXzjRrBRx Worth the wait
The problem with the phone is the price, if you live internationally, I pre-preordered it day 1 and even with that discount the phone would end up costing me close a grand canadian because of shipping and duties. I just couldn’t justify the cost, I am glad I went with the Kompakt,
Now in terms of looks I will give it to the Light phone 3, I like that it does not look like a smartphone, thats my only ding against the Kompakt, out in the world you do look like every other person holding a phone, but after reading Ursuzulas post about her travels it seems as though the Kompakt is a conversation starter so I guess I need to have the phone in my hands to have a better impression of it, overall in my opinion the Kompakt is just the better overall phone in todays world
