Kompakt vs. Boox Palma

In previous discussions, I mentioned I was going to be sticking with the Light Phone III as my primary phone starting in 2025 as a personal choice and I didn’t end up backing Mudita’s Kompakt. However, I recently came across a video that talked highly about the Boox Palma’s e-reader, e-ink screen & ability to make the device productivity forward (will attach video at the end). Even the refresh rate was really well demonstrated, where one could play videos on it (not something I would want to do, but just to see how well built it is).

This made me think, have I made a mistake by not backing the Kompakt? This one reviewer made the Boox Palma look like a perfect device to go along with my phone, purely for productivity/reference apps & the e-reader. So, what if I get an actual side-phone I could use instead of the Boox Palma? Here comes the Kompakt.

I could go on and do a specific tech side-by-side comparison of all the different features, but I started this discussion to see what people think in terms of using the Kompakt phone as a side-companion, instead of a main phone. More importantly, how do you feel about the Kompakt versus the Boox Palma? Which is better (putting aside the fact that the Kompakt is an actual phone, I’m just talking about the applications, OS, flexibility in use ability) ?

I wanted to start a discussion comparing these devices side by side. Let’s first just get the major difference out of the way, the Boox Palma is not a phone, while the Kompakt is. In some ways, that almost makes it better (depending on user). It will be a good way to integrate the portion of Boox I like, but with the ability to still communicate.

I’m starting to see Kompakt with a different set of eyes. I saw the Kompakt as only a phone and I wasn’t very happy with that idea when being compared to the Light Phone 3. However, if I see it as a productivity device with an e-reader & ability to communitcate, it’s starting to look a little more attractive to me. And it’s even starting to make me think- could this actually be the phone I’m after? Would this device actually fit my lifestyle better than the Light Phone 3?

I’m really hoping for some responses comparing the Boox Palma & Kompakt (not Light Phone) because now I’m unsure which device to purchase between these two. I’d appreciate hearing other people’s opinions & thoughts about this comparison between two different, but similar devices.

I’m curious to hear what you have to say! Especially when looking at the Kompakt as not a primary phone, or maybe, seeing it through my eyes as an unexpected solution?

Never heard of Palma, but I put my trust in HiSens` A5 as proven, yet unavail.

Yeah, I guess the Boox Palma was a device to represent any-type of e-ink reader that allows for other app downloads. I found a reviewer who rated a bunch of these and they all have pros and cons. I got a bit overwhelmed by the options. This one also looks nice. So I guess my question for you is, if you own this already, are you purchasing the Kompakt for the fact it also is a phone?

Contrast A5 is great but has no PlayStore. unless sideloaded
HiSense obviously does not have a Trumps blessing

I don`t think you have made a mistake by deciding for the LP3. Although I am backing the Kompakt, I really love the design of the LP3 and that it has a removable battery, and if you are looking for a truly minimalist phone, I think you nailed it. But I was after an e-ink device, and for me the possibility of sideloading is not a disantvantage. After all, we ourselves have to decide how to use technology, and the Kompakt seemingly gives me this freedom, that I really appreciate. We will see how it turns out in the real life when it is released.

I hope the Kompakt can function as my main communication device, as my everyday companion, and if it can replace my e-book reader as well…whoa. It has almost everything I am looking for: eInk display, communication capabilities, offline maps. And some flexibility to hack it. What I miss, though, is the color e-Ink, but who knows, maybe the Kompakt2 comes with color ePaper. (Greetings to the developers  )

So, long story short: I do not know which one is better, the Palma or the Kompakt. But I think the Kompakt has the potential to be better as the Palma.
