Is there anyone else here using the Kompakt in France ?
If so, what is your carrier and did you manage to have VoLTE calls working ? (No 3g fallback)
Here, always been using Orange based carriers (Telecoop, Sosh) but apparently it is impossible to have the Kompakt on their VoLTE whitelist. So lower quality calls, less compatibilty, and no more calls after 2028…
Really looking for a long term solution ! What can Mudita do to have their phone certified ?
This is currently my perfect phone (6 months user), I reaaaaally want to keep it in the long run !
Thank you for flagging this. Could you share what reason your network carrier is giving you? Are they using the word “whitelist” or that Mudita Kompakt is not certified?
Yes, they said the Kompakt was not on their VoLTE whitelist and probably would never be because it is too niche and that Mudita did have to perform the certification process.
I’ve reached out to our team about this & asked them to look into it. I’ve used Kompakt in France (but I was roaming in Cannes & Nice) so the capability is there.
I wonder how it works in case of roaming. But I reached out Orange several times and had a chat with an executive who confirmed it was not supported / whitelisted.
@bidinou I passed on the info you gave me to our team. Technically a network operator should not arbitrarily block a device in the EU if it’s tested & compliant and has the CE certification in the EU.
When I looked up this subject, I read that a VoLTE certification had to be obtained for each carrier. Which is probably… complicated for a company such as Mudita.
The Orange executive told me it was not planned to support the Kompakt because it was too niche and / or because of its chipset which is possibly unsupported…
He told me that the other solution was to ask Mudita to have their phone VoLTE certified… at a cost.
Anyway… It hurts me but I decided to switch to Free (hopefully temporarily). It’s still important to tackle this issue because Orange is the most important carrier in France and many virtual carriers use this network.

Paul, I have a question for you : when calling in VoLTE, is the phone quality increased compared to regular 3G calls ? It is the case with the other phones I tried (like my Nokia flip phone) but not the case with the Kompakt - VoLTE is displayed on my phone, “HD” is displayed on my interlocutor’s phone - but the call still sounds lo-fi.
EDIT : Hmm… I am 100% sure that in the week Orange / Sosh “forced” VoLTE on my line, contrary to free, it DID sound HD…
Second question : do you notice some sound clipping / saturation on the earpiece ? I have can some from around 66% of the volume (depends on the volume of the person I call of course)… I think it was not the case before I got my screen fixed… Doesn’t happen with the bottom speaker. Or maybe the maximum gain was increased in the latest update ?
According to Google : “it appears that the phone and the carrier are failing to negotiate High-Definition audio codecs (like AMR-WB or EVS). Instead, the connection falls back to a low-bitrate standard codec (AMR-NB). This happens because Free Mobile requires a certified carrier-specific configuration (IMS profile) to unlock HD Voice channels, which seems to be missing or generic for Free Mobile in the current version of MuditaOS.”
Hello. I’ve been using the Mudita Kompakt on the Orange France network since late July. The only times calls go through via VoLTE is after I’ve put my SIM card back into my Samsung Galaxy S23 for a few hours and then reinserted it into the Mudita Kompakt; the first call I make from the Mudita after that goes through via VoLTE—but only the first one; subsequent calls do not.
Thanks for your feedback ! Yeah, that makes sense ; Orange still thinks you’re using your Samsung and disables VoLTE afterwards. Hope it’s gonna be settled eventually (Mudita has to ask for a certification apparently). Then I’ll switch back to Orange
Or maybe Orange will have to be tolerant when the 3G antennas are dismantled, in two years.
(actually, I could have kept my Orange/Sosh/Telecoop subscription meanwhile : I have bad call quality using Free)
Thanks, @deberly, for describing what happens after moving your SIM back from the Samsung. That detail is useful, and I understand why this is frustrating.
I checked with our colleague responsible for network compatibility about this issue. He informed me that repeat VoLTE tests on Orange France were successful. The team also monitored whether access might be blocked after some time. After five days, VoLTE calls were still working, with no abnormal behavior found in the logs.
These results are encouraging, but they don’t yet explain why you’re experiencing something different. Regarding the possible device whitelist or certification requirement, our tests did not show this kind of blocking, so we can’t confirm that as the cause.
Could you let us know which MuditaOS K version you’re using and whether your subscription (network phone plan) is directly with Orange or another provider using its network? Also, after that first VoLTE call, do subsequent calls still connect over 2G/3G, or do they fail altogether? This would help us compare your experience with the test results.
An Orange executive told me a couple months back that the phone was not supported and that it would likely not change, because not part of their strict whitelisting. For 2 potential reasons : too niche / or maybe not fully supported hardware. He said a certification process would be required.
When “forcing” manually, VoLTE temporarily works, but stops after a couple weeks. Orange said they could only force once. Maybe that explains why your team managed to get it to work ?
It does work with “Free” which has no strict VoLTE enablement policy, but Free VoLTE interoperability is bad - it reverts to a low quality codec.
I am not super fond of Free and would like to get back to Orange / Telecoop (ethic French carrier based on Orange) so I’ll definitely follow this !
I am using MuditaOS K version 1.6.0. My carrier is Orange France, and I purchased my plan directly from Orange. Indeed, the first call made from my Mudita Kompakt after removing the SIM card from my Samsung goes through via VoLTE—and the HD audio quality is noticeable. Subsequent calls work, but the quality is lower (though still satisfactory), and the VoLTE indicator no longer appears on the screen. This pattern repeats consistently whenever I briefly use my Samsung Galaxy again. I hope this answers your questions.
