Kompakt photo comparison (vs iPhone, Jelly star)

While I’m sure not many people bought the Kompakt just for the camera - I wanted to share a comparison of the Kompakt camera vs. two other phones so others can have a reference for photo quality. In outdoor, brightly lit conditions, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by some of the photos (though it’s not always the same case in lower light). Sharpness is always a bit lower, but I’ll let you judge for yourself:

Three photos here, taken with:

  1. Mudita Kompakt
  2. Unihertz Jelly Star
  3. iPhone 14 Pro

Yeah, not bad at all. First I got surprised how good the Jelly Star is, even compared to the iPhone, then I checked and it has a 48 MP camera…that’s why there’s more detail on the picture.

In a strange way, you can draw a comparison to using a film camera. Because when you’re taking the photo on the e-ink screen, you really can’t tell what it’s going to look like. Later when seeing the images on your computer, you find some nice surprises that look better than you expected (some duds too of course, but that’s part of film photography as well :grinning: )

Not just the megapixels matter, but also the size of the image sensor. That’s why some people choose digital camera based on whether they have a full frame or not. If my maths not wrong, an FHD (2 megapixel) image could be fair enough for a 15x10cm picture printed with 300 dpi resolution - but the sensor, optics and noise are crucial.

Yes, the sensor size and quality matters way more than the megapixels. My 24mp Ricoh GRiii will take significantly better photos than any smartphone (including those listed with 100mp).

One more example, in lower lighting conditions. Unfortunately the Kompakt version is compressed a bit since I had to send it to myself over whatsapp, but you can still obcviously see it beats the Jelly star and loses to the iPhone 13 here:

  1. Kompakt

  2. Jelly star

  3. iPhone 13

I’m still using Sony NEX 5 which is a full-frame compact camera with replaceable lens and it beats every phone camera I had so far. If I could only find a new battery to it…

I kinda like the glow of the Kompakt.

im using a Ricoh GR IIIx for my go to camera. i dont want to use phones for a camera anymore, though the little camera on the kompakt is a good ‘handy’ one when needed.

I like the lighting too but the photo is a bit soft overall. In general I like that the pictures don’t look overly processed, but the lens is on the soft side.

Jellystar glow here looks very stylized in the garage photos, I like it. Not unhappy with the Kompakt in any of these tests though. It seems it handles the high end of exposure softly along with not capturing texture as well as the iphone. Makes sense because the Kompakt is lower resolution and considerably smaller file sizes.

Does downloading the Kompakt photos from Whatsapp result in the same file size / quality as wired file transfer?

Agree, I think the camera meets or slightly exceeds what I was expecting.

Looks like the WhatsApp version (posted here) is 1600x1200, 115KB, and the directly downloaded version is 3264 × 2448, 3MB. You can definitely see the difference when zooming in.

I tried to post the full resolution for comparison, but seems the forum downscales it anyway, so you can’t tell.

You inspired me to try how the Kompakt compares to my Qin F21 Pro with it´s 5MP camera. Native files, no compression. Here are the results:

I enjoyed using the NEX 5 myself, and it’s a great camera. However, it doesn’t have a full-frame sensor, but an APSC sensor.

You’re right! I remembered the catchphrase back in the day and saw something bigger behind the lens but didn’t verify further. It was given away to me from my sister-in-law as her husband has a more professional camera.

These photos are amazing! Can you please explain how you are getting them off the phone? I have a Windows machine.

@Alice_H you just have to connect your Mudita Kompakt to your computer & POW!

Where did that audiobooks folder come from? Sorry if it is a silly question!

I think it should come from Readium which is the tool kit used to build the Mudita Ereader app from what I saw in the APK.

And in it’s source code it has elements to allow audiobooks as well, but they’re not implemented in the Mudita Ereader, it’s very barebones currently.

Oh I see! So i should not put downloaded audiobooks in that folder then?
