Kompakt emits RF while offline+ is enabled

Hello so I discovered that the kompakt blasts RF everytime you wakeup the screen/unlock device. It seems to do it with airplane mode and even the offline+ enabled. It does it briefly and then stops but this still is an issue regardless.
Mudita please fix this!

WHOA! That’s really bad! I feel betrayed now :confounded:
I thought this was a privacy-oriented phone ??? First the Sentry and now this ???

If this isn’t being fixed immediately, Mudita should rename the switch to “Online-”

I wonder what is the root cause, but there could be several explanations.

First of all, you’re in the near field of the phone. A bit too close for the meter, they typically are for far field (physics of the near field are messed up). 1 V/m is kinda small.
I’m not sure if some display controller voltage switch wouldn’t cause a blip like this.
Could be some brief power-cycle of some of the components.
Could be another type of software issue.

If you worry about actual traffic being sent out, try capturing traffic. And verify what’s the frequency of that spike because EMF is everything. Is 60 mW/m2 considered data transmission capable power density?

Yeah the sentry thing and this definitely has me bummed. I dont want to be spiked with RF everytime I unlock the device for no reason…

These consumer meters dont have great range so this distance is just fine, its not the first time of me using this meter. I am not talking about EF/EMF, if you look at the larger “RF” reading that is what im talking about. There should be nothing causing this RF blip especially with the offline+ enabled. I wonder if the bluetooth radio is waking up briefly and then shutting off which shouldnt be happening.

But RF is specifically crazy in the first meter from an appliance. Whenever you measure throughput in wireless, it must also be at least one meter away - especially with MIMO.
Could be that one of the software-driven things cycles briefly and that would mean it’s some sneaky bug.
Not necessarily a security or health issue though, let’s compare the amount of energy emitted with any regular BT/Wi-Fi/GSM/LTE signalling/transmission.
I’m kind of perfectionist myself so I agree, ideally the meter would be quiet.
I can’t falsify the idea of some IC causing such RF artifact in the near field. By the end of the day, everything is EMF - including RF, light, and your own body heat.
I vote for a bug.

The TL;DR version is this:

When Offline+ is switched on, Mudita Kompakt is physically disconnected from all radios (cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mics). It cannot send or receive any data.

Like any powered electronic device, it still emits tiny, harmless electromagnetic noise simply because electricity is flowing through its circuits. That is normal physics, not a bug, and it carries zero data. No tracking, no transmission, no connectivity.

Here’s the full take from the team:

  1. The Offline+ Switch is Absolute (No Data Transmission)
    When you activate the physical Offline+ switch on the side of the Kompakt, it executes a hard, electrical disconnect of the GSM modem, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and microphones.
    The antennas are physically cut off from the power source.
  • Because of this hardware-level severance, it is physically impossible for the phone to transmit or receive cellular data, location pings, or wireless communications. Your privacy is fully secured.
  1. General RF/EMI vs. Cellular Transmission
    As you correctly noted, any device with a battery and a circuit board generates a localized electromagnetic field (EMI) simply by having electricity flow through it.
  • The processor computing background tasks (like keeping the time), the battery regulating power, and even the E-Ink display refreshing the screen all create tiny electromagnetic fluctuations.
  • Highly sensitive RF and EMF meters will pick up this “background noise” from the Kompakt, just as they would from a digital watch, a basic alarm clock, or a pocket calculator.
  1. Physics, Not a Bug
    Because this emission is a natural byproduct of electricity moving through physical circuits, it is indeed a matter of physics and not a software behavior that can be “patched” or “fixed.” As long as the device is powered on, it will emit a baseline level of electromagnetic noise.
    However, we want to reiterate that this localized electrical noise contains zero data. It is not communicating with cell towers, routers, or other devices. The phone remains in a state of complete digital isolation.
