yea i’ve noticed the same thing, the text in the ereader app is already more grey than on the rest of the phone. No idea how to change it though, hopefully something they fix in an update

Yeah strange the text will sometimes be a higher contrast when I first open the reader but as soon as the page is turned will go to the faint contrast. Agree hopefully adjustable in next update, I read quite a bit on it; even if faint still better than reading on iphone display… was absolutely killing my eyes

I will ask our team if they have any suggestions.

Awesome thank you @urszula; as above it clearly has capability for higher contrast since it will be darker when I first open the reader… but first page flip it becomes faint again. Anyways still miles better than reading on my iphone…

That’s the reason why i’m using KOreader instead of the default one.
I would love to use the kompakt ereader app and have less apps sideloaded but for the time being this issue make it hard to use.
Hope they can made this corrections to the app so we can use it.

Thanks for bringing this up. What you guys are noticing comes from the way E-Ink displays interpret different kinds of content.

We all know that e ink is wonderful for the eyes, but it works within certain limits. When a book or doc contains more than just plain text, the device has to strike a balance. Pure black-and-white rendering gives the strongest contrast for text, however it makes images, diagrams and shaded areas almost disappear. Using a range of grays helps those visual elements stay readable, although it can make the text appear a little lighter than expected.

Because every file is structured differently, the same book can look slightly different depending on its format. If you haven’t already, it may be worth trying an alternative version of the file. Sometimes another format is interpreted in a way that results in stronger contrast. I noticed this when I read a book in ePUB vs PDF format.

We’re already exploring options that would give readers more control over contrast in the future. Your feedback helps us understand what matters most, so thank you for taking the time to let us know.

thanks very much @urszula will try some PDFs etc; Kompakt only support epub and pdf correct?

@blazemiller1989 Thant’s correct- ePUB & PDF

hey @urszula it seems the way that kindle, audiobookshelf, and koreader do this is with font weight or boldness. Maybe something like that? The same epub in the Mudita app is much less legible (to me) than the same file in audiobookshelf.

Also having read the release notes (and not actually tried 1.4) would Mudita consider an option to have the old style page flip back for the e-reader app? Scrolling for me is a bit too “smart phone”, and I like the idea of “traditional” e-reader page flips. Bonus points for volume button doing this like audiobookshelf does.

Thanks @steve! Great feedback! I will pass this on to our team.

But then I wonder, how does Kompakt’s e-ink screen differ from other e-readers like Kobo or Kindle? On my Kobo, the text isn’t gray with exactly the same book that I also have on my Kompakt.

I’ll ask the team for some specifics & I will get back to you. I’m not an expert on E ink screens, so it’s hard for me to tell.

great new features in the OS update; feel it should be a simple software fix to make the default contrast rendering darker on text as image but even as is still a great pocket reader ! … that also doubles as a phone + music player

KOReader is great. It does a lot of things well by default.

A general question, which is valid for other built-in Mudita apps like the ereader: Why not fork something like KOReader and do minimal changes to it instead of building an app from scratch?

KOReader is AGPL GitHub - koreader/koreader: An ebook reader application supporting PDF, DjVu, EPUB, FB2 and many more formats, running on Cervantes, Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook and Android devices
