This might be a very niche recommendation, and as the title suggests, it is only available in German, to my knowledge. It’s the “ARD Text” app, which provides access to the “videotext” service of German public television. Older people may remember “videotext” or “teletext” as a text-based information service on TV.
It was introduced in the mid-1970s, but the content is still maintained to this day. That’s the beauty of publicly funded television
There are sections for news, sports, the economy, culture, and so on. If you’re curious, here’s the web-based version: ARD Text - Der Teletext im Ersten
So, the ARD Text app works perfectly on the Kompakt.
It’s entirely text-based, so lightning fast with no ads or visual appeal.
It’s not a browser, so no outgoing links and no way to escape the app.
I used this app on my regular smartphone for years because of its speed and simplicity, but on the Kompakt it makes even more sense as it’s essentially a reading device. It’s worth a try for people who don’t want a browser but still want a way to pass the time occasionally. Of course you know best, if you want any kind of news on your Kompakt.
I’m still not sure about the size of the German audience here on the forum, but it might help two or three people. There may also be equivalent services in other countries that I’m not aware of, who knows?!
