After transferring my Verizon Sim from a supported and approved Android device to my Mudita Kompakt I was able to send messages and people received my calls, they picked up, I could hear them, but they could not hear anything I was saying through the phone. I tested the microphone’s functionality in the recorder app and it does work so I am unsure if Verizon is blocking the call functionality or if there is something wrong with my Kompakt.
When I tried to do a device switch on Verizon’s website it said I had to call to complete the transfer. When I provided the IMEI and name of the phone to a representative over there, they said that it was not on Verizon’s list of compatible phones, so the agent over there put it in a request to have this device approved by Verizon. This request came back a day later as denied and they confirmed they do not support the Kompakt.
I did contact Mudita Support via email but the response didn’t resolve my issue so I thought I would bring it here.
Just thought I would inform any users planning to use the Kompakt on Verizon. For reference I am using the Global Optimized version in NA, I will be trying a trial T-Mobile sim but the coverage is not as good in my area as Verizon is.
The global optimized version can be purchased and sent to North America, I pre-ordered my Kompakt on their website beginning of April and got it 2 days ago.
This has happened to me before with the Punkt phone and I found a solution. Calls were dropping constantly, i couldnt use data, and AT&T had no idea what my phone was. But it didn’t matter if they “supported” my phone or not. I made them give me the AT&T APN settings. Once I manually entered those in, my problems went away.
Before returning your Kompakt or switching carriers, I think It’s definitely worth a shot just straight up asking Verizon for their APN settings and putting them in manually in your settings. Although I will say that I remember Verizon being an issue with Punkt users.
I’ve never had a problem getting APN settings from any carrier. Oftentimes they will even list them on their website. But if they do give you any trouble, you can usually just Google them, although, you will have to wade through outdated and incomplete ones and do a lot of trail and error. Your best bet is asking. Let me know how it goes.
@orojyn I’m sorry to hear that you’re experiencing problems. It’s hard to pinpoint what could be causing the issues since I’m not in the US & can’t duplicate the errors. That said, according to the head of our Kompakt team, radio tests in USA showed, that voice connection works well in Verizon network. I believe @Jose_Briones also tested Verizon & said it worked fine. Have you tried turning on/off airplane mode to force a connection to another base station, or try connecting to a Wi-Fi network and using Wi-Fi Calling?
Unfortunately Verizon is notorious for making it hard to join their network with non-typical phones (wouldn’t shock me if they get a kickback from the manufacturers or something). Typically you can trick it with the APN process above or by activating the SIM in a different “approved” phone and switching it over
Thank you for starting this thread. I really hope that Mudita can put forward clear instructions on how to activate the Kompakt on Verizon asap as they are also the best carrier for my area. This could be an opportunity for them to get ahead of an issue that will be affecting many N.A. purchasers and potentially prevent unnecessary customer service requests / returns.
Final update for now;
I tried the sim switching thing one more time. I went to a Verizon store in person, got a new sim, activated in a approved phone, transferred the sim to the Kompakt and I got the issue of the other person not being able to hear my voice.
I asked for the APN settings and they said I would have to call a technician over the phone instead of in store for some reason. I got someone on the phone but they were only willing to help me if it was a ‘Verizon approved device’, so they did not give me the APN settings. Even after trying to find my own APN settings to input through searches and threads I could not get my voice to be heard over the call despite the microphone working in the recording app.
I got a pre-paid T-Mobile sim with a temp number for $15 US dollars to try and see if it was a carrier thing. And unfortunately I got no such luck, I ran into the same issue. I can make and receive texts. But when I make a call the other person cannot hear me at all.
As mentioned at the beginning of this thread, I tested the microphone’s functionality in the recorder app and it is working. But whenever I am in a call REGARDLESS of carrier I am unable to be heard by the other person at all. I tried the mute and speakers buttons in the call as well to no avail. I made calls to Apple and Android devices, I could not find any correlation. I also did a factory reset to see if any settings were affecting my microphones functionality in calls as well as enabling and disabling location services, also to no avail.
In conclusion, this is no longer a Carrier issue. Instead there seems to be something wrong with my Kompakt’s microphone in calls. I will reach out to Mudita support again with a renewed focus on this issue. However, I don’t have the time to wait and see if the next version update fixes what might be a software issue because In 3 days I will be out of my return window. Despite liking this device very much I may have to issue a return as I cannot diagnose if this is a software or hardware issue.
