Proposing one simple change that will improve the keyboard experience: when opening the keyboard in most contexts, it should “push” the content up the page, rather than covering the bottom half of the content.
The main place this is an issue is the default SMS app. You can see the behavior with these steps
- Open an existing message
- Click in the text box to begin typing
- Now the bottom half of the conversation (most recent 3-4 messages) are covered by the keyboard. You must close the keyboard to see content you are replying to.
Now repeat steps 1 + 2 without manually closing the keyboard, continue with these steps:
4. Press home button
5. Open SMS app again
6. Now the hidden content is pushed above the keyboard (as it should have been the first time)
Note: sometimes when I’m opening a new text, the keyboard covers it immediately, even when I don’t click to type. So I never see the message until clicking back to clear keyboard. I can’t figure out which sequence causes it to happen this way.
Same behavior occasionally happens with sideloaded apps. I know you’re not supporting these, but ideally this improved keyboard behavior would be the default in all contexts.
